What do WP cadets think about the Citadel?

I hope to get into WP after high school, but the Citadel seems kind of appealing to me sometimes. I'm just curious if there are any WP cadets in here who have been to the Citadel or talked to guys from the Citadel and what you thought about it/them?

I've heard Academy guys can sometimes act sort of elitist towards them which is why I ask.

What difference does it make? If you go to the Citadel - don't worry about what WP cadets think of the Citadel. The object is to find a good match for you. If you are interested in both then apply to both and visit both.
If you get into both schools then you should decide.
Don't worry about what other people think -
even if they do wear West Point's uniforms.....;)

I appreciate the response, but I didn't mean to imply that it makes a difference to me either way, I'm only asking out of curiosity. I ask Citadel guys the same question. I don't intend to choose my school based on what anyone says here, I just find it interesting to hear what cadets at different schools think about their counterparts.

I'm a yuk at WP right now and I visited the Citadel back when I was making my college decision. From my experiences, one of the major differences between the two is that the Citadel is more 'Old Corps' in how it develops its underclassmen. That's not to say that West Point is any easier (even if it were, the academics would definitely make up for it), but the Citadel is not under direct control of the Army so I think it's been a little slow to move away from its heritage.

Also bear in mind that everyone at West Point will get their commissions eventually, while the Citadel maintains basic cadets that hold no military obligation whatsoever. I'll give them one thing, though - Charleston definitely beats Highland Falls.

Thanks Triggs. What would you say is the attitude that most WP guys have towards Citadel guys? Are they viewed as sort of a joke by most of you guys or are they pretty well respected?

Sorry if I'm getting annoying, I just find this stuff fascinating.

Cadets at West Point are so busy they don't have time for attitudes - and they would have nothing but respect for those who are likely to serve alongside them.

I got accepted to the citadel today XD. I am applying to USAFA USNA and USMA

Triggs, my plebe indicated he met someone who had attended for a year at VMI. Would these two schools be similar in the "old corps" method of developing underclassmen? He apparently has heard some very interesting stories from there as well.

flyersboy114, congratulations! You are well on your way!

From my experience, USMA cadets really have no opinion on The Citadel, VMI, or other private military schools because they really have very limited, if any, interaction with them. The only military schools that cadets really have an opinion on is USNA and USAFA because they run transfer programs and all the rivalry and sports and what not.

First "civilized" exchange I've seen on here in a long time. Older folks, take note of how nice the young fellas play and learn from it.

What are you talking about?

Thanks Anonagron!

Oh, Boss, there you go again. Who will you be criticizing next? Go find Jamzmom! :D:D:D

(just kidding)

Civilized is so nice.

I know of a cadet in the Class of 2011 whose twin brother is at the Citadel. Maybe he will pipe in about what cadets at West Point think of cadets at the Citadel. I've only heard favorable comments about the Citadel, VMI and other schools with military programs from my son and his friends. Something about we will all be paddling together someday...

There was an infamous 2LT during CFT that was from the Citadel that took pleasure in giving cadets a really hard time, but there's no way he was representative of Citadel grads as a whole. I personally give Citadel guys a lot of credit because I know what they have to go through. Like ScreamingEagle said, we don't have much interaction with them to have any real opinion.

I'm not that familiar with VMI's methods (I've seen its campus but that's it), so I can't say. Student body-wise, it's similar to the Citadel in that it has basic cadets. From what I've heard it's a little 'Old Corps' as well.

The bottom line is that where someone graduates from has absolutely nothing to do with how they'll perform as a leader. If you talk about academics and facilities, then yes, I'd definitely say some schools might be better equipped than others.
