just follow what Cal Newport said form how to succed in college. Dress nicely and appropriately :)

Ok, so it looks like chuy was right. Stop rubbing it in my face already; I overestimated the mentality of the typical college female. I don't really like the polo look, though. I have a couple of them, but if I'm going to wear a collared shirt, it's probably going to be a short sleeved dress shirt. Fitted of course... and only one's that are meant to be worn untucked.

I just wear either a polo + shorts or jeans.

i wear casual dresses... I dress up just because i want to look nice and I wouldn't feel comfortable in jeans + tee-shirt, but thats just me. Anyhow, my friends and I just sit next to the cutest guy that we can find!

Wear whatever the hell you want, this isn't Romania. Everyone is either too sleepy or too focused on the lecture's content to give a damn unless you're wearing something gaudy or outrageous.

Jeans and a t-shirt work well. I don't know where chuy goes to school but I think polos are a bit much for daily lecture. Also, aren't most of the girls on this thread still in high school? Hollister? AE? That may be appropriate for APUSH but it'll get you laughed at in ANTHRO 351.

polos are a bit much for a lecture in new york? wow.

I dress up a bit more than that very often. Fairly common here.

"Boys in polos (especially Hollister, A&F, AE) are usually cute, which makes me want to sit by them ;-)"

Thank you to caillebotte.

I usually get pretty dressed up for class, a nice dress, shoes, some jewelry, etc. If I do wear jeans, it'll be with a nice top, not like a t-shirt. That just tends to be the school culture down here.

For me its a sign of respect. It can come off as not caring if you show up for class looking like you just rolled out of bed 5 minutes ago. People notice when you look nice and when you don't look nice.

Perhaps I should clarify. A ton of guys here wear collared shirts, whether it be polos or button downs tucked into khakis. It just seems a bit excessive to me.

I can appreciate when girls take the time to look as presentable as this; sure gets my attention.

there's no way i'll get all turned out for my 8 a.m..tooooo tired..

i wear dresses on TR when i don't have class until 2 :)

and of course when i go out..i kind of like dressing casually all week and then going all out on weekend nights..it makes my boy appreciate it more haha

I can appreciate when girls take the time to look as presentable as this; sure gets my attention.

Yeah, I agree. Although not to the point of appearing incredibly high maintenance or materialistic. I'm pretty fashion conscious myself, so when I see a chick that doesn't put any effort into dressing well, it's kind of a turn off.

That said, if you aren't in good shape (or at least slim), you aren't going to look good in any clothes and there's no point spending a lot of money on them. Goes for both girls and guys.

Russell, that just isn't true. I've seen people who I would definitely not call slim look amazing in the right clothes. It's not easy, and most people don't know how to highlight their most attractive features, but to say that heavier people can't look attractive at all is absurd.

Edit: Okay, this post applies mostly to girls. Guys really do need to be slimmer, because guys just don't have the clothing options to mask a huge gut.

Let me know when you meet someone who tried to go to office hours and the professor wouldn't talk to to them b/c they wore tshirts to class.

What, chicks DO have the clothing options to mask a huge gut or chunky thighs? You mean like those parachute shirts that could easily pass as garbage bags that chubby chicks wear in order to try and look good? Instead of having a figure that they can show off they're desperately hiding things trying to look less fat. You can't highlight attractive features that you don't have. Nice clothes are a bad investment for "heavier" (aka obese, fat, etc.) people. My opinion.

edit: I guess it depends on the individual as well. But I've never been attracted to an overweight woman ever. And when I see them spending a lot of money on clothes I just think to myself "why? no one will find you attractive anyway." I guess it'd be ignorant to believe that there aren't people with lower standards.

God bless the girls on here who like guys who dress up....you've made me feel much better about myself/less self-conscious for always wearing polos + jeans (or button ups + jeans), lol. It's nice to know some girls appreciate it!

Girls who dress skankily/sluttly/overly casual are kind of a turn off for me too, so it's also nice to know I'm not the only guy who finds girls who make an effort to wear nice clothes attractive.

Are you talking about the short shorts and the revealing tops? Eh, I don't mind those outfits.

I can tell you that about 75% of everyone in my lectures wears brands like this. And this is a state university. I guess these are intro classes so maybe when you get older you start liking brandless clothing, but for now, I'm just talking about what I've seen.

I didn't mean it in that sense, but in that I feel you're taken more seriously when you dress well compared to someone dressed in just a t-shirt and jeans. This is especially true later in college and afterwards when you start looking for jobs and references.

This thread is making me self concious...I like buying nice clothes but I'm not skinny (I'm not overweight either...right smack dab in the middle of the BMI range)...I'm worried people think I look stupid
