<p>just a quick question, how do you refer to counselors you have never met and are sending an email? Calling them mr. or ms. when they are just out of college feels a bit awkward, but so does calling them by their first name. Should i skip it all together and just say Hi- or what? thank you!</p>
<p>Always err on the side of showing too much respect. Better to show TOO much respect, rather than not enough. Worst-case scenario, you'll make them feel important.</p>

<p>^good advice. If they prefer first names (many do), they will tell you. No one is insulted by initial formality but the opposite is not true.</p>
