What do you do in your NHS?

I was elected president of our school's chapter of NHS, and I really wanted to help make NHS a more active part of our school and community. In the past we had always stuck to a can drive or two, plus 3-4 school dances - really nothing that actually DID anything. Is there anything that your NHS does that has a positive impact? Ideas would be awesome :)

I was president of my chapter of NHS and I can say the bureaucracy stopped me from doing anything. You can partner with Habitat for Humanity, or work with the Red Cross - don’t be afraid to reach out and email/call organizations - you can’t lose.

My NHS organizes blood drives, a week to raise money for a selected charity, and all seniors are required to have a “senior project” of volunteering that does something that isn’t already being done.

Thanks guys  any other suggestions?

We collect soda can tabs for the Ronald McDonald Charity. Last Friday we made blankets for babies! It’s really easy; you just need a yard of fleece and some scissors. Um…we tutor in the library every day after school for an hour. We ask kids to sign up and it counts as volunteer hours. We do can food drives too. I think we work with Student Council and do some adopt-a-family program for Christmas.
