What do you do to ward off sleep while studying?

I usually start to doze off after about an hour and a half from the time I start studying even if I study in the library and when it happens nothing can stop it !!!! What techniques do you use?

this is gonna work 100% sure, I have used it a thousand times.

you take a nap, wake up and continue your work.

Coffee. Or a short nap usually does the trick. I'm surprised you last an hour and a half. For me, it's usually pretty instantaneous =)

Stand up and walk around while studying.

Make the studying more active instead of passive by physically doing something--write questions in the margin of a textbook, make flashcards, memorize with arm and leg movements--sounds funny but it works.

Make the room cooler.

Don't sit on your bed--sit in a slightly-uncomfortable, straight-backed chair at your desk.

If you're really tired, just like when you're driving a car, a 30 minute nap will refresh you faster than 30 minutes of a coffee break. Just set your alarm, and don't sleep past 30 minutes or you may sleep straight through to the next day.

yeah definitely take a nap, but be sure to set your alarm. i hate when i forget to set mine, and then end up sleeping for 2 hours.

I agree with those who are telling you to take a nap. You won't learn the material well if you are too tired. Even better than napping is sleeping enough each night so you are not falling asleep during the day. Yes, I'm a mom, and, yes, I fell asleep while studying (and even while in class) a lot freshman year. So I can understand if you just roll your eyes as you read this response. However, I did eventually get used to the workload and budgeting my time more effectively, so getting enough sleep was not impossible or even especially difficult through most of my college years. I don't deal well with very little sleep, so studying past the point of exhaustion was never really important to me.

sometimes i take a nap...

but the catch is that sometimes i don't wake up until 10 hours later...

That's what I fear the most proton lol

Yeah when I nap, I sleep right though my alarm.

I normally go to the all you can eat cafeteria, plop myself down with a constant stream of coffee, and just go at it. Only works if you're disciplined enough not to eat out the place. I'm just there for the coffee.

also, eat less and often. stuffing urself for dinner is asking for a food coma later on

Done that. hahahaa.

If you have somebody who can wake u up that might help. my roommate never could get me to wake up because she's not very persistent (people have to literally kick me before I'll wake up) so she let me sleep through 2-3 times... (3rd time was the last day of school and since I stayed up all night the day before that studying for my finals i took a long ass nap... And of course I haven't packed anything. she was suppose to wake me up at 9 but I woke up at 12 ish... I spent all night packing stuff in the dark, good stuff.)

Energy drinks work sometimes. Tab's effect has worn off though on me, it only worked first few times. Now i can totally sleep after drinking 2-3 tabs...

don't take a 30 minute nap... that's just stupid. You'll wake up in the middle of a sleep cycle and it will be counter-productive.

Nap for 90 minutes (a full cycle) or don't nap at all.

Silverclover that's pretty good advice.

How much sleep are you getting on a nightly basis?

Do you fall asleep while studying all subjects, or only specific subjects?

if you really wanna stay up...amphetamines

It's not that bad Bojangles lol

Don't take a 90 minute nap! That makes you (or me at least) feel like crap. I would say about 20 minutes or so, maybe less..

Take a break and walk around, eat a peice of fruit? Honestly I couldn't study for more than an hour straight without a break.

The worst (and most tempting) thing you can do is eat sugary snacks and energy drinks with lots of sugar. Try water, coffee, or sugar-free redbull (less of a crash from sugar) and eat fruit or cashews or nuts (something with protein). Chewing gum helps too.

Go to sleep, wake up and study the next day or tell myself to start studying earlier next time.

how much sleep do you get each night? problem might be too little sleep. Also,, could be lack of interest in subject. I recommend taking more interesting classes or major if thats the problem

The AC in the study room is enough to keep me awake.
