What do you do when a person you know is going to fake test results?

Hi everyone... I wrote here a few times but hardly came back. Though this board has provided me with all the information I needed.

I have a big problem with a friend, well, not much of a friend, more like a peer, classmate.
This girl is applying to the same places I am, she's applying to G'town, BU, Columbia and NYU. Her high school record is really bad, she has about two F's. She thought it could be ignored, but than she saw my diploma and some other's and realize she wasn't a good candidate at any of these schools.

We live in Bulgaria, she insists to attend these top schools and is not willing to settle, therefor she is risking faking her high school transcripts. I didn't know what to tell her when she told me that, she thinks they can't really tell if she faked it because no one would bother check on her. What do you guys think I should do or tell her? I'm in a major dilema here.

Thanks guys.

thats is GRUESOME AND ABSOLUTELY WRONG

..

I can relate to what you wrote, but if she even thinks about it then she has absoluteley no maral or values. Go tell that to a person like her. I don't know, it upsets me. I tried telling her she can never get away with it, but honestly, I don't know if that's true. Maybe it's true, what she thinks, and no one will even find out. I really don't know what to say to her!

She will need someone complicit....transcripts usually come directly from the institution of record......who at the school is going to alter the records? The girl can report herself to have a better record but when your school submits the transcript it will reflect the factual scores.....the Fs. How does she plan to get this record at the school changed? Money, access to someone of power?

Our school prints us an official copy. So she has one, she can get envalpoes with the school's name, everyone can do in our school.
So she'll do her thing... I have no idea how she plans to fake it, it's possible, yet it's hard. Then she puts it in the school's envalpe and mails it, I guess.

yeah transcripts are not send by her only. the schools require an official copy which must come from the counselor.

I just yold her everything you guys have said and told her to come and write here too. She said it's not a preblem for her to get a signature from someone she knows at the school, get the stampts and all and just mail it away with the school's paper and envalope. I hope she does come here and you can help me talk her out of it.

Thanks everybody

And by the way, she's a very smart kid, seriously. It may not sound like it. I don't know much about her personal life but I do know she had problems at home during high schoo (parents' devorce, family losing all of their money and funds, some social problems in high school, problematic brother), not easy life. I try not to judge her, but I try to encourage her to start over in a new path, and I strongly think she should start with telling the truth, starting with telling schools maybe some of the circumstances).

This is absolutely abhoring. U should notify ur prinicipal or something. Some of us work really hard during those 5 years in highschool,so it won't be fair...
Btw if she had several F in her transcript what about her SAT score ???
it should be low as well ?
god, I hate cheaters so much

One can have a perfect SAT score and many Fs.......these two don't correlate. If she has the intellect but doesn't do the work......she can earn Fs.

still, it is NOT fair

Only one F... She is not that dumb I think. I feel bad telling someone, first I want to see if I can make her understand how wrong this is. And yeah, I know what it's like to work hard and then have someone cheating like that.

Blaire781, what about her other stats:
SAT I, SAT II, ec's etc ?? U can't apply just with ur GPA lol :)

I can somewhat understand how she could get F's. (A failure here myself. But I sucked it up and moved on.) I don't think she'll learn much from it if she fakes it. Okay, so what if she manages it and it gets sent...what about the teacher recommendations? Counselor recommendations? Would the teacher recs not shine light on her academic ability? And either the transcript is signed by an secondary school officer or stamped by the school seal...

Tell someone. That's my best vote...or push the counselors to seal her - or everybody's - transcripts and sign over the seal. So discrepancies might be noticed by the receiving school over the difference of the application packet.

How would you approach her on that?

I don't know if your school has any type of honor policy but this girl is putting you in a very bad situation.......have you considered that?

IzzyJ:
or push the counselors to seal her - or everybody's - transcripts and sign over the seal. So discrepancies might be noticed by the receiving school over the difference of the application packet.

Can you explain what you meant here? I didn't understand...

Okay. My school does it like this. Teachers type up the recommendations on computer, print it out, tick out whatever boxes on the paper teacher recommendation, sign it and attach the typed recommendation to the university's teacher rec paper. Then they give it to the guidance counselor.

The counselor then puts the recommendations, her recommendation and the transcript (with the school stamp on it. The one that "embosses" the paper) in one envelope and seals it (with tape or glue), then gives it to the student to mail. She signs across the seal in marker.

So if your counselor does it for EVERY applicant, and this girl ends up applying to the same schools as same of the others, it's should be very different (or should be unless she's great at forging paper transcripts, stamps and signatures) from the others.

Hopefully the school will notice and wonder.

Or...tell somebody responsible and who won't say it was you who told them.

if she can fake the transcript, she should have no problem faking all the recs too. my take on this: she must be very confident that she can get away. that's why she told the OP. OP is not her best friend or anything; why would she tell her unless she's very sure?

I know this because i happen to know someone who used connections to get into a very prestigious school (I won't even say most prestigious). no one knew for sure, but it was the only logical conclusion for that someone's absolute confidence. But i can't tell you which year was it.

Blaire, i must commend you on your willingness to help her instead of just telling on her.

Using connections and using fraud are not exactly the same thing. Are you saying that a person who has influence and also gets in is using fraud????
