I just received my acceptance letter from NMT today. I just want to know what others think about it. I got in as an electrical engineer, but if I go, I will try to double major or at least take more computer science classes. It supposedly is #15 in producing science PhDs.
Now, I still have many other schools to apply to and get results back from. This is a very early acceptance for anyone at school, I think I am the first person to be accepted to a school this year in my school...

Is net cost after non-loan financial aid affordable to you?

Consider acceptance with insufficient financial aid to be effectively the same as rejection.

Considering the fact that UC tuition is sky rocketing, it probably is as affordable. NMT Tuition for OOS is $15,754. UCs will surpass that next year. Did not get FA package yet since FAFSA opens on Oct 1st.

Total out of state cost of attendance is $28,330 for 2011-2012.

This is cheaper than UC (but not CSU including Cal Poly) in-state list price, but the big variable is determining your net cost relative to other schools is financial aid (many public schools do not give much financial aid to out-of-state students). Unfortunately, putting “financial aid estimator” in the search box at [New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology: Science Engineering Research University](http://www.nmt.edu) does not yield anything of the sort like at many other schools.

But if you have not gotten the financial aid offer, and you cannot afford the list price, you have not really been accepted to the point that you can attend. Admissions-wise, it is now a safety, but you have to determine whether it is a safety (sufficient financial aid known or guaranteed, or you can afford list price), match (sufficient financial aid likely, but not guaranteed), reach (sufficient financial aid possible, but unlikely), or out of reach (sufficient financial aid has no chance of happening) for cost.

I got the WUE scholarship which brings the tuition down to ~$7000. The total price is right around $13K without any aid (Including travel and ect). With Federal Aid, it will be around $0-$3K I estimate ($5,500 PELL Grant with Federal Work study and SEOG Grant). So, this school seems like the most likely for me to go to right now.

Sounds good that it is very low cost for you (but don’t get too confident until you see the actual aid letter). Have you been accepted with sufficient aid at any other schools?

:/ Yea, NMT is still the cheapest option. Good thing I found 2 professors with the same research interests as I do, but it does not seem that they are actively researching right now…

I am with you in many respects. From California, likely WUE, like the overall cost and likely job placement in PE. Applied for Cal Grant too. Hopefully I can use it if granted.
NMIT sent me a letter saying they want to waive the application fee and for me to make some changes to my original application. My Mom has it, I haven’t read it yet. Still waiting to hear from Brown and Georgetown first. NMIT is my default school, just makes sense for many reasons.

Oh, I’ll be coming in with a newly minted A.A. degree in business so will transfer as a junior. Spent 3 years at the community college level.
