What do you hate or dislike about GWU and NYU?

What do you hate or dislike about GWU (George Washington University) and NYU (New York University)?
My daughter has several choices after receiving many college acceptances but at this point her top 2 choices are NYU and GWU. We've heard all of the students that LOVE the schools and seen all of the positive promo materials. Now we want to know what people DISLIKE about the schools. Opinions on the schools itself, classes, professors, food, local area, students, community... all of that. PLEASE NOTE: Please only answer if you have actual experience with the schools. Whether you're a student, staff, live in the area or have a family member that's been there. Please don't answer if you've just heard 'rumors'.

I know a lot of NYU students and most of them love the school. My son spends a lot of his time with friends who go to school there when he comes home from his college during breaks. Loves spending the time there, but emphatically does not want to go there. Likes his school much more, due to the traditional college life, sports, activities, and the togetherness of being students of the same college rather than spread through Manhattan. For graduate school, he thinks this would be great but it’s missing the unique US college experience.

What I like about GWU:
-Dining plan. GW’s not traditional in that there’s no purchasing of the # of meals. We have a debit card like system where we have a certain amount of money on our IDs, and we can use that to buy food from the dining halls and partnered restaurants. Dining hall food pricing is based off of weight. So basically it teaches you how to budget and prevents overeating.
-Dorms. Some GW kids complain about the dorms here, but I’ve visited many schools’ dorms, and GW has some of the best dorms.
-Opportunities. Since GW is near many federal buildings, there are many opportunities to intern there. However, I feel that these opportunities are more for those interested in politics.
-Diversity. There are so many people from everywhere. I’ve met people from as far as Morocco and Burma.
-Metro. GW has its own metro stop, so that makes it convenient to travel.

What I dislike:
-Greek life. I’m not that into Greek, but it’s pretty big here. There are a lot of professional and non professional frats/sororities. Your daughter might or might not like it though.
-Campus. I personally don’t like the campus. While it’s like NYU’s open campus, I just don’t like the DC environment. I’m more of a NY girl I guess. I suggest that your daughter visit just to see how it feels.
-Students. People are generally mature, but they’re not intellectually curious enough for me.
-2 main campuses. 1 campus is in foggy bottom, the other is on Mount Vernon. People generally make fun of those living on Mount Vernon, and I really hate that. This is probably one of the main reasons why we have no school spirit.
-Research opportunities. I feel that they’re kinda hard to get here because we have to apply for a limited amount of fellowships. In addition, there aren’t a lot of them for my major (Econ). So I think it’s hard to gain research experience here.

For professors and classes, I don’t think it’ll be any different from NYU. Because no matter which college it is, there are bound to be professors that are terrible and classes that are big. My intro classes so far have not exceeded 200 people though. I also have found 1 or 2 professors of mine who really shouldn’t be teaching. Nonetheless, most of them are really dedicated in ensuring that their students do well.

This is just my few cents on NYU because I’m applying to transfer there. Also, some of these are from my friends.

What I like about NYU:
-Location. Love NYC, enough said.
-Opportunities. The opportunities here are definitely more targeted towards my major and what business field I want to enter.
-Research. Unlike GW, it encourages everyone to research and present them in a conference. I really like this because I just want the research experience first, and then I’ll apply for fellowships. GW skips this step.
-Diversity.
-Courses offered. I looked at both NYU’s and GW’s course listings, and it seems like NYU offers more interesting courses whereas GW offers the common college courses. For example, one of the Econ courses at NYU was something like “Economics in Rock & Roll and Sex”
-More dining halls.
-Professors. The professors at NYU are highly regarded in their fields. Some have won nobel peace prizes. How well they teach is something I’m not sure of

What I dislike about NYU:
-Very expensive
-Most likely a lack of unity like GW. But I could be wrong since there’s only one main campus.
-Stern and Tisch’s egotism?

Side notes: cost of living is pretty much as high as GW’s. School spirit is also just as low, that’s what I’m sure of.
