My daughter is planning to apply ED to Brown. She loves the school but I have not yet visited. For those of you who are current students (and others who have spent time on campus), what do you like best about Brown? What do you like least? D is planning on studying civil (environmental) engineering. Does anyone have any experience with the engineering department that he or she would like to share? Thanks!

I'm a current freshman at brown, and have been here a month (to the day actually)....

I'd have to say, from my experiences so far, my favorite thing about Brown is the general academic feel. I came from a VERY competitive high school, where it was common for kids to refuse to help others because they feared others might get better grades than them. That's not what Brown is at all - in fact, I just returned from a "study-session" with a few kids as we have a mini-paper due tomorrow. If there is any competition, it's between our individual selves, trying to challenge and push ourselves to do our best. I also LOVE the fact that the professors are so accessible, and so INTO teaching undergrads. if you go to a larger university, or any of the other ivys for that matter (in my opinion), you're not going to get this much unndergrad attention. in this way, i think brown's lack of a great grad school is actually a blessing. come here for undergrad, go elsewhere for grad - that's my motto.

In terms of what I don't like - I think some of the facilities could use a bit of improvement. Some of the buildings and classrooms are kinda of old looking, and I think with the new money from "boldly brown," the facilities should be revamped a little. But I know that will take time....

You can search through the forum -- there are a number of threads very similar to this one, so you can get other students' perspectives, too.

I'm currently a sophomore at Brown, and my favorite thing so far has been the other students. I thought I would be really intimidated coming here and being surrounded by people who are all so bright and talented, but people on average are just so warm and outgoing here that it's impossible to be intimidated for long -- now my peers inspire me, and that's a really good feeling.

I'd agree with MattyB that some of our facilities aren't quite as fancy as at some peer schools, but that doesn't really have much of an effect on my experience here.

I wasn't expecting the amazing level of warmth and modesty in the student body. I'm continuously astonished by my peers, both in class and out, but

No requirements is by far the best thing about Brown...Im going to be able to double major in poli sci and biology...and still have time remaining to take classes outside the box and graduate in 4 years.

You guys are lucky! Got into Brown!! (sry couldn't resist)

Anyway, (im just a jr from HS just so bear that in mind :)
From the things I've heard from my friends and posts on CC, and I must say that the aforementioned posts are one of the greatest and prominent aspects of Brown: warmth of faculty and peers and collaboration among students.

just got back from an alumni weekend at brown, and i've got to echo what has been said about the people. the brown community is incredibly warm, interesting, passionate, intelligent...from the class of '26 to the class of '06

engineers at brown have a history of making great entrepreneurs...it is also the oldest undergrad engineering program in the ivy league and second oldest in the country

Thanks so much for taking the time to give me feedback. I love that everyone focused on the people and the atmosphere created by the students and faculty. No wonder my D has such a great feeling about the school - and based on the descriptions, I think she'd be a great fit. Now, if she would just choose an essay and finish the application...

I love thayer street, the laid back but brilliant student body, and community feel. Brown is awesome!

sounds like a very nice Ivy.

it's the best

Good, genuine people (students, faculty and administrators included in that). A lot of my friends went to well-regarded schools but honestly I think I'm the only one or perhaps one of the minority who loves rather than likes their school. I could ramble on and on about it but really the best thing to do is to visit and see if you think you would benefit by being here.
