What do you like/not like about UBC?

For the moment, the University of British Columbia is my top choice for college. I’m very young, and won’t be applying anywhere anytime soon, but I like to be prepared. I want to go because of its location, the reasonable price compared to US schools, and because they have a ton of courses offered that interest me. So tell me, if you/you child/your friend attended or is attending UBC, what do they think about it? I especially want to hear about the Faculty of Arts. I hear classes are hard; are they manageable?

Bump. I want to know too. Same situation.

I’m curious as well

hey guys. I am a current UBC student. I am originally from the US, but I am a permanent resident of Canada so I came to UBC for the cheap Canadian tuition. I really love how international UBC is, and I also really like Vancouver, its such a beautiful city! However it rains all the time october-april and its also very expensive. The faculty system at UBC (like most Canadian universitys) admits into one faculty. It is possible to change faculties, but its sort of a pain in the ass. I applied to the faculty of science but wasn’t admitted because I did not take Physics 12, because my school didn’t have physics lol. So I was admitted into Arts, and then worked on applying to sciences as a first choice transfer and LFS as a second choice. I was accepted to sciences, so now I am in that faculty. However, with the faculty system I feel like you don’t really get the one year freshmen grace period that you do at lots of US Universities (except for majors like nursing or engineering), and sometimes I feel sort of boxed in by my major. So I am planning on doing my second year at UBC, seeing how it goes, and then applying to transfer to a few other schools I was admitted to as a freshmen, BU, Vanderbilt, McGill, Vassar, and Dartmouth. Overall, I do like UBC, but if you have no idea what you want to study, things could get problematic.

I graduated from UBC a few years ago and it was awesome. Like Canadagoose said: super international university and city - I had friends from pretty much every continent. As an international student, the tuition compared to US schools of the same quality was a huge incentive.

I was in the Faculty of Arts and while it certainly isn’t easy, it’s definitely manageable… I mean, if you have the grades to get into UBC you probably won’t struggle, right? I’d say the biggest difficulty is adapting to university life, where there is no teacher/parent breathing down the neck for you to do your homework… you’ve got to learn to be independent and know when it’s time to hit the library instead of going for sushi again.

I absolutely love the North American system, where you get to study a ton of electives - I took classes in everything from film studies to anthropology to computer science to Japanese… and didn’t major in any of those! Really good way to explore all of your interests :)

Hope this helps!
