What do you love and hate about BC?

This is for alumni and people that go to BC currently. I am a high school student and am looking into going to BC. I was wondering what you love and hate about BC. This is going to help me for decisions on colleges. Thank you!

There’s really too many things that I love about BC to list here. The location gives you perfect access to Boston without dealing with actual city life. The campus is gorgeous, D1 sports including the best college hockey team in the country are everywhere, and the size makes it so you always meet new people but never really feel lost in a crowd.

One big issue to watch for with BC though is the lack of diversity, and not just in race. The vast majority of people here are well-off white kids. At my orientation session myself and one other kid were the only 2 out of 20 that went to public high schools. If you’re looking to meet really artsy kids or guys that wear all black and combat boots, well you’ll have to look for awhile. I’ve never seen such a large collection of salmon colored shorts and snap-backs in my life.

Don’t let that dissuade you though, there’s plenty of regular people here. It’s just that the majority of people fall into a jock or preppy category.

Well, actually, the majority of kids that go to BC went to public high schools, according to BC statistics.

good- professors
bad- far from boston

good: i think the people here are what make BC one of the best places ever, not be cheesy. Everybody gets along, in general, and the professors are all here to help you if you go and ask for it. I have to agree that the sports atmosphere is pretty good, but not great. Football games are always fun, but they’d be more fun if we win more often; the basketball games are, well, lackluster; hockey is fantastic and our best sport. Furthermore, I find that I have access to a lot of things, such as atms, post offices, and etc. just a walking distance of short train ride away.

bad: I am confident that the architects who designed this school didn’t understand the usefulness of elevators at this school. BC dining is not all that it’s cut out to be. I guarantee that you will be tired of the food within a month. There just needs to be more variety considering this is the place that needs to feed me 3 times a day. Also, the dining plans, especially the mandatory ones, are completely idiotic as everyone has the exact same plan and all the food here is prorated. The nightlife here is at best above average, usually average, and BC police are extremely strict here as their only focus is to catch drunk kids (considering that there’s barely any crime in Newton, MA or on campus).

I hope this helps. Overall, I love it at BC and good luck.

Good - location
Bad - the Jesuit cult

Small nit, but the Lower Campus is actually inside the Boston City line; it is IN Boston.

I assume you meant downtown?

yes technically it is in boston, with lower campus being in brighton. i guess what i meant was it is far from the south end, beacon hill, downtown crossing, kenmore, west end, back bay, mission hill etc.

Brighton is just a neighborhood IN the City of Boston. :)

yes i am from boston, i understand brighton is in boston lol. i guess campus is just far from all the neighborhoods (listed above) i generally hang out in is all  maybe not for others. also campus is as far west as you can possibly go while still technically being in city limits. it is just a bad location in my opinion.

Fair enough. But others believe just the opposite. They prefer the suburban-type location over the much more urban character of BU and Northeastern. But I gotta ask, if you ‘hate’ (the topic of this thread) or dislike its location, why even apply to BC?

Of course, I have a similar question for Rising Chemist: if the “Jesuit cult” is “bad” why did you even apply? BC is first and foremost a Jesuit college. That’s what makes BC what it is. Chemistry is a rather generic major, and there are a couple of thousand colleges that can do chemistry well.

true, some may prefer that type of location. it is what I don’t like about the school though, which was the original poster’s question.

As for why I applied/go to BC, I wanted to stay in Boston. At the time I did not think being that far west would bother me. I quickly found out I was dead wrong. However thats the only thing I really dont like about the school, everything else is great, so no need to transfer either.
