Hey guys,

I was wondering what UT considers instate as far as tuition and admissions are concerned. Somebody told me that you have to be a Texas student for three years to be considered instate for admission, and have to have been living there for at least six months as far as residency/tuition go.

Can someone clarify this? I could be moving to Texas(probably Lago Vista), and since its easier to get in state rather than outofstate, it's important for me to know.

Thanks.

Plus, it is really that much harder to get in outofstate? Or is it just that damn 10% rule?

I moved from California by myself to gain residency in Texas to go to UT. You have to be living here for a full 12 consecutive months before enrollment. There is also another requirement, 1. u either have to own a business or property in Texas, 2. you have to marry someone who is a Texas resident, 3. I forget the third one but its a hard one like the previous two, or 4. you have to be working for 12 consecutive months in Texas before enrollment, which I am doing. #4 works for me because I started work last August 21st, and classes start next fall on the 30th.

I would definitely consider gaining residency because u will be saving a buttload of money like I will be, plus u get a year off of school, plus u make a lot of money. By the time this year is up, I will be able to pay off the first 2 years of my college expenses, which definitely helps my parents and I.

Hold up, dude.

So you graduated from high school, took a year off, moved to Texas, worked, and after 12 months you applied to UT Austin as in-state? I'm assuming you applied after 12 months of living there, not applying first and then moving and working. Is this the best thing to do? I mean, can you even apply a year late, and does this affect your chances of getting in?

Was what you did(moving there) for admission, tuition, or both?

Thanks.

By the way, where from NorthCal are you from? I used to live in Redding for a while.
