What do you not like about the UW?

So, those of you that are already Huskies, what are some things that you don't particularly like at the UW?

No parking. I'm not a Husky til the fall but I just know this.

the dorms could be better.
the football team could be better (like how they were 5 years ago).

(most of the time) I HATE the grade point system. It's not like a lot of colleges or high school where you get a letter grade. It's just hard to be happy when you get a 3.9 in a class that would be a 4.0 at so many other schools. However, it's more of a headache than anything. I'm just a student with too many 3.9s.

Also too many stairs. (haha)

It's not a letter-based grading system?

Nope.

"The UW uses a numerical grading system, with certain exceptions in the schools of Dentistry, Law, and Medicine. Instructors may report grades from 4.0 to 0.7 in 0.1 increments and the grade 0.0. The number 0.0 is assigned for failing work or if a student does not officially withdraw. Grades in the range 0.6 to 0.1 may not be assigned. Grades reported in this range are converted by the Office of the Registrar to 0.0. "

Is it insanely possible to get a 3.9-4.0?

Depends on the class. I have found most classes it takes a lot of work, but it's not impossible. Some classes it is even easy to get a 4.0 (or at least a 3.6+). In general teachers use these percentages to convert the grade point:

<a href="http://faculty.washington.edu/scstroup/Gradescale.html%5B/url%5D">http://faculty.washington.edu/scstroup/Gradescale.html</a></p>

However, that scale is not true for science classes because they are often curved. And although the grading seems daunting, I have always been pleasantly surprised when grades come out.

I did Running Start last year and the community college I attended used the same scale as UW. I found it almost impossible to get a 4.0, but for the most part you'll still end up with a good overall GPA. Its hard because there's such a fine line between 3.9 and 4.0, that you really can't be sure you got a 4.0 until the end of the quarter. I went into my finals with over 98.5 in all my classes and still was scared ****less about making a stupid mistake. I guess overall though the grading scale probably has a greater effect on perfectionists than others.

What I dislike most about the UW is that, because it's not too difficult to get into, especially in-state, roughly half of even the honors- and higher-level classes will be composed of apathetic morons.

The fact that because it's a public institution what happens down in Olympia affects indirectly the quality of education. When UW faculty members start leaving for other schools because they just aren't paid as well as their peers, that's not a good thing.

Also the sheer size of the school can be overwhelming for some. Sometimes I was just honestly disappointed with the apathy of the faculty members towards undergraduates, but then again at any large research institution this should be expected.
