<p>Doctors sleep in late because they spent all night partying. When they wake up, they get ready and go to the hospital where they work. At the hospital, they yell "clear!" while defibrillating patients in critical condition, and occasionally yelling "get me an IV, STAT!!!" at nurses.<br>
Then they see a few more patients, and then at the end of the day (or night, depending on their schedule) they drive to their 4-story $2.4 million home in their Lamborghini (or Ferrari, depending on which they felt like driving that day), where they unwind with a cold beer and television. They'll spend time with the spouse and kids, recounting the numerous interesting patients and events they saw that day.
Occasionally they get sued.</p>

<p>This is the life of the average doctor.</p>

<p>From what I've seen, work hours vary a lot, anywhere from fifty-five (primary care, practicing physician) to a hundred (neurosurgical residents) hours a week.</p>

<p>Of course, "back in the day", surgery residents in the hospital my father was a resident at (fortunately he was in medicine) would do a two-month shift. Two months, in the hospital, all day, every day. On call for 1,440 straight hours.</p>

<p>So today's "no more than thirty straight hours" rule looks positively tame by comparison.</p>

<p>In the modern era, young physicians get about as much time as young lawyers and somewhat more than young investment bankers. But those are the three worst professions out there, hours-wise -- and at least lawyers and investment bankers are well-paid.</p>
