**Schaeffer/b In one of these threads within the CMU board, someone mentioned he was a good professor!

**Klein/b How is this class? I haven't heard anything about it and was wondering how it is difficulty-wise and workload-wise.

**Harkins/b Is this the intro to computer programming course? I've never taken a computer class in my life. How is it?!

**Alba/b This course seems pretty fun. I've spoken with Dr. Alba several times (also being my advisor), and seems like a nice guy, but what is this class like? To my understanding, he is the only professor for this class.

How is this schedule? I feel like it might be top-heavy, but if this is the "normal"-looking schedule (mine looks to be 49 credits, which doesn't seem too bad), I don't think I'll opt to have it changed. Which ones do you think will give me the most trouble? Which are the most time-consuming? Haha.. thanks for the help, and I hope to see some of you on campus soon.

P.S.- What's the max number of credit-units I'm allowed per semester?

I was under the impression that CSW is pretty easy, since it's only a 3 unit-course heh. I have a feeling that bio & chem may be my toughest classes, unless I'm mistaken and it turns out that Rev. of Circ. and I&A are my toughest classes, which may be possible, since I know nothing about each class (from a student's perspective!)

Thanks for the input, by the way! I hope I survive my first semester..

everyone has to take csw. the course has nothing to whatsoever with computer science, it just teaches you common sense stuff like how to use the internet.

Schaeffer is the man. He makes Calc in 3D easy, if not fun. If you're having trouble, go to his office hours and all will be made clear. He's very helpful and excellent at explaining sometimes difficult material.

CSW purports to teach computer-related ethics, which is just stupid. However, later on it teaches you how to work with the campus computing environment (Andrew Unix servers and whatnot) which you should definitely know. It's pass-fail, so just roll with it.

I feeling much better about Schaeffer (heard only good things so far!) I'm thinking about switching out of Revolutions in Circularity (perhaps take it 2nd semester instead of 1st semester), but my advisor (Dr. Alba) is also the professor for that course, and I would feel bad (and awkward) if I asked him if I could get out of that course for the 1st semester and take a different course (especially since I chose that course as my first choice as an elective-type class). I wanted to switch out, because I've heard the course is tough, and I don't know if I want to deal with a schedule that's too tough for my first semester!

I probably should have researched about the course a little more, but I had no clue that my schedule would be packed with what seems to be intense courses. Would it be a problem (or rude) to ask to be placed out of his class (at least for now)? Thanks for any input on this situation. I hope it all turns out well eek..

krabble, which section of bio are you in? i know one of the sections (section B i think) is the honors section, which will move quicker and cover more material.

I'm in section B, and the "course title" omits the "A Modern Biology" and it just says "Honors Section" (I'm assuming with the "Biology" implied). I'm not sure why (if at all) Revolutions in Circularity is a tough course. The material seems pretty interesting though.

Revolutions of Circularity is a course specifically meant for Science and Humanities Scholars, as Alba is the head of SHS. The point of the course is to teach about interdisciplinary study. I could see why it may be a difficult course, as it is meant for the SHS scholars, who are top performers, and Dr. Alba is teaching it himself. It is a course in the 200's so it definitely isn't an introduction course. By the way, getting into the class requires the professor's approval too. I am in it even though I'm not a SHS scholar though, so who knows? All I care about is that it sounds pretty interesting.

Even though they shouldn't be, sometimes 200 level courses are intro courses. There are no stats courses that are 100 level; 36-201 is the lowest.

Hmm.. I didn't receive any information about a biology placement test, and I'd probably turn it to crap, since I haven't touched bio since 9th grade haha.. I would be more than happy to be placed into "A Modern Biology" course instead of the honors section, but I might change my major from chem to bio, so I guess the honors section may pay off anyway!

76101 (interp) completely depends on who you've got teaching it. I had William Blake teaching a section about The Simpsons & Mass Media which sounded awesome, but the guy was lazy and the class ended up being horrible. As for CSW, it's easy for most people. People still manage to fail though, usually by forgetting to show up on test days (or missing the "networking" section).

Just in case anyone cares, I took 76101 with Bondra. It was about Walt Whitman and it made me want to kill myself. If you're a fan of Walt Whitman, go for it; but otherwise, Bondra is not that good of a teacher and analyzing transcendentalist poetry is quite torturous for those of us who aren't into that kind of thing.

Berget is a pretty good professor. I had him for some advanced biology class so the environment was different. It was a small class. Modern Bio is probably going to be a pretty big lecture. He's a jolly old man

Warnock is a pretty good professor. He isn't too difficult. When I had him he did lots of demos in class and blew things up. I'm not sure if he does that anymore because he got in trouble for setting off a fire alarm. He also has a thick accent (irish maybe) which is sometimes hard to understand

oh man that sucks, my second favorite moment in high school chem was my teacher putting sodium in water. the best was when we put various chlorides in fire and watched the fire change colors.
