I'm wondering whether I should do a summer science program at a university or go to a third world country (educate the children there and help out at a hospital), over the summer...
Which one would you choose if you were in my situation?

Third world country. It’s more unusual. Plenty of people go do summer research, but probably a lot less go to other countries and help teach children.

I disagree. Summer research is much more valuable IMO. For the most part going to a third world country shows that you have the money to do so…I know lots of rich kids who volunteer in third world countries. I knew fewer students who were able to find a research opportunity.

Anyway, you could have the best of both worlds and do summer research abroad: [KEI: Study Abroad & Intern Abroad](http://www.keiabroad.org/programs/bangkok/academics.php)

5-6 week program in Thailand. It was cancelled last year due to the floods there, but contact Eduardo Mandell to see if it will resume next summer.
