What do you think is better?

Hey guys.. I am in the process of choosing which minor I should go with.

I am a History Major wanting to go to grad school. I have to decide THIS semester (actually before the semester starts) what I want my minor to be.

I only need a few more hours to get an English minor, but would that be to easy (and look that way) on my Grad application? I am listed as a PoliSci minor but I have not really started taking classes, which means it is not to late to change. I am not planning on apply to a GREAT program due to personal reasons.

So can you help me out?

What would you choose?

Pick a minor that you like and that you think will be most useful to you. I don’t think any particular minor looks “better” or “good” to grad committees in the sense that a “bad” minor would break your admission to the school. A cultural anthropologist with a history minor may be looked upon favorably, but a physics minor wouldn’t detract from the application per se.

If you want to do the English minor, go ahead and get the English minor. I don’t know why you would think it would look “too easy.” The exercise of reading many books in a short period of time and writing many papers on those books can only be useful for a history PhD student, and will likely be looked upon favorably by professors who will recognize that.

Thank you very much. Once I really sat down and though about it, I came up with the same conclusion. I believe that proving with an English minor that you can do research and read multiple books would look favorably to a graduate school!

Again, thank you for your advice!

What kind of graduate school? Just an MA in Anerican history? Then whatever you’d like.

But for a PHD, first thing comes to my mind is languages. Don’t bother with a minor-just get started…

I am wanting to get my masters first and then decide whether to continue to a PhD. I am wanting to focus on Ancient History.

Well, at my school, to major in History, you have to also go for a minor. I am focusing on two languages at this point, French and Greek. (Problem is my school does not offer Greek, so if any of you have a suggestion on what I can do, it would be GREATLY welcomed!!!

Again guys, thank you SOO much

Can you minor in French? If you want to continue building on your Greek, next summer, take an intensive Greek class at Harvard or any other large university.

Does the school have a Classics program that maybe you can minor in? If you are interested in anthropology, then go for it, as my roommate is in Classics and she’s focused on anthropology of it.

Remember our suggestions in your first thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/graduate-school/879518-history-graduate-school.html</a> Follow it. You can also PM WilliamC about ancient history/Classics program. He’ll most likely suggest that you do a post-bac as MA programs are extremely competitive across the board.
