What do you think my chances of getting into NYU/Tisch are?

Hey everyone! Thank to all of those who replied to my ‘How to get into Tisch’ thread, it really is appreciated immensely.

Now, I think I need some more help. I was wondering if you thought I even had a chance to get in…

Okay, so… I’m a sophmore in high school. Last year, I got mostly 90’s in all my classes and I’d say my GPA was around a 3.6-3.8 area. This year, it’s terrible at 3.3-3.4 area. I plan on kicking butt next year and striving for a 4.0…! Hopefully that happens. I have done a lot of out of school activities… I’m a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, I take private voice lessons, I’ve been taking acting, improvision, and musical theater classes at Gateway Playhouse (pretty high on the regional theater ‘amazing’ scale) for many years, I’ve done some community service, I plan productions, I write scripts for my local library’s shows for children, I produce those shows, and direct them as well. NYU Tisch is my dream school, and it would crush me if I don’t get in, but please be honest.

Thanks in advance!

**And I’ve been in many out of school shows and concerts/ cabaret type things…

Oh~ And if you have any suggestions, I appreciate those a lot as well!

You already know from your other thread that getting in is about 50/50 re academics and artistic review. And academically it’s too soon to say because you don’t have SAT/ACT scores AND planning on kicking butt/striving for a 4.0 and doing it are two different things. They will look at your grades only through the end of Junior year so I would say do what you can to bring up your GPA and make sure you are taking a rigorous curriculum of AP and honors classes. Good luck! :)

Ill say it again! I had a 3.29! A 3.4 is NOT terrible haha. Im in the New Studio for musical theater if it makes a difference. You can do it! You definitely sound well rounded to me, and they look, I think, interesting people who would do well in their program rather than those with a 4.0 and 2400, although that can’t hurt I’m sure.

But my main advice is to not have one single “dream school.” Look around and keep your options open, there are LOTS of great schools and programs out there.

^^^Keep in mind that GPAs are not looked at in a vacuum and you can’t compare someone’s GPA to another person’s on a message board. It matters the rigor of the chosen curriculum, not just the GPA. It matters the grades in the core subjects individually. Also, what percentile in one’s senior class a GPA may fall (differs from high school to high school). For example, a 3.29 (which is like a 3.3) GPA in the most rigorous HS curriculum available may be looked at more favorably than a 3.4 GPA in the least demanding curriculum available. Also, a 3.29 GPA may put one in the top 25%tile in one high school but put one in the lower 50%tile in another high school. Further, a 3.29 GPA might be compensated by a student who scored well on the SAT Subject Tests. A kid with a 3.29 GPA could conceivably have mostly Bs on the transcript and maybe a kid with a 3.4 GPA has several C’s, and some A’s and less consistent grades overall. Lots of variables and so you can’t compare this one stat from person to person, let alone without the whole of the application.

Agree that having one single dream school is not wise.

Thank you AGAIN everyone… I have been looking at other schools that look interesting with good musical theater programs that i would settle with, but why settle?! Haha

Thank so much again, I really appreciate it!

There are lots of MT programs that are OUTSTANDING besides Tisch. If you get into one of those and not Tisch, I would not consider that “settling.” There is truly no ONE single best MT school. Yes, I think Tisch is awesome and my kid loved it but I do not believe that is the only school that is very good at MT. I think it is just one of several. Try NOT to focus on ONE school in such a highly competitive process. Come to love many schools. There are many where you could be happy and many that have top level MT training.
