I have a 10-11 4.2 weighted GPA and a 3.74 unweighted. My ACT score is 31 with a 10 on the essay, but I'm taking it again in September, hoping for a 33 or better. I was on varsity swimming for 3 years and am going to join again this year. I've been in a few clubs throughout my high school career but have held no leadership positions (hoping to change that though). I know I'm nothing special. I just wanted to know if I should even bother applying.

Thanks for your response!

well what is your major. if you are undecided, then its probably a no go. if you are comm then admit rate is under 10%. your scores seem to right around what UCLA is looking for and any improvement will only better your chances. write a good essay, choose a major and roll the dice. i would not be surprised at an acceptance letter however, remember that UCLA is extremely competitive, accepting between 22-27% and they have weird acceptance habits. i know some people that got denied from UCLA and UCB but accepted to High ranking or Ivy league schools

I will either be majoring in Biology or Political Science.

I have an 800 on the Bio and U.S. History SAT subject tests, but I did pretty badly on the Chemistry (don’t want to share that score). Oh and I always wanted to know if this would affect my chances at all: My ACT scores are 33 31 33 26 with a 10 on the essay. I got a 2 on the AP Chem, a 3 on AP Calc A/B, and a 5 on the AP Lang. I’ve always gotten A’s in my math and science classes, and I’ve always gotten B’s in my English classes except for 2nd semester AP Lang, Junior year (got an A-). I was shocked when I got a 5 on the AP Lang and a 3 on the AP Calc. I expected it to be the other way around. And I was also shocked that I got a 10 on the essay because I suck at writing essays. So I was wondering if the fact that my test scores and grades contradict each other would create some sort of a problem. My ACT and AP scores say I’m more of an English person, whereas my grades say I’m more of a math/science person.

biology will be more competitive than poli sci. the lag in chem could be an issue, but write a kick ass essay, you have a good shot.

also on a second note, you should apply to other UCs. I know UCSD has a great, perhaps better, poli sci program than UCLA and is less competitive. explore all your options :)

Your weighted GPA is definitely in the range of UC Berkeley and UCLA (Their average GPA W is 4.0+ for admitted). If you get your ACT up to your projected range, it would make you a competitive applicant. Your SAT IIs are amazing! I’m sure you’ve done more ECs like volunteering and summer activities; although the lack of leadership is not the best.

I agree with the others that applying to other UC campuses would be a good idea. UCSD’s biology program is top-notch!
