We just came back from a big college tour on the east coast. Dickinson was beautiful lnd had good programs if you are interest in non-erformance arts programs. Unless someone tells me differently they seemed to have a very minimal theatre program. Also Carlisle was pretty but seemed very conservative.

I grew up in Carlisle and moved to New Orleans when college rolled around. I can not imagine trying to have a social life in Carlisle that doesn't revolve around drinking keg beer at a frat house. There is absolutely no bar scene, unless you go 30 min away to Harrisburg. Its not the type of town that even has cabs, so you have to drive yourself around or designate someone to drive. Its very white, very middle class, hell, we just got a Target in the next town over that is going to revolutionize Central Pennsylvania!
Let me also add that growing up there, I had never met a Jewish person til I left PA and I certainly didnt have any African American friends in Carlisle either. I can't speak for Dickinson as an institution but you have to think about where you will be happy.

I have visited twice...very positive experiences both times. If you're interested in studying abroad, you can't do better than Dickinson...excellent languages,too...lots more offered than traditional faire. Coming from NYC with tons of nightlife, I sort of like this quaint quieter town. Might even be attending...I was accepted! (Good classics...my probable major.)

If you like looking at gray limestone in rural booneyville you'll love this place. Isolation is stark. They try to get as many students over to Europe each year as possible. Foreign languages are the core of the curriculum. The campus is very small and boredom can set in as early as late first year-there is just not that much to do. The athletic program struggles and student support at games is minimal. Muhlenburg has three times the spirit of the Red Devils and certainly superior facilities. Dickinson has a great public relations group that somehow perpetuate the facade that Dick is a top tier lac. It simply is not!

My nephew spent two years there and then transferred to Allegheny College where he had an exceptional experience after much frustration and angst at Dickinson especially with the administration. He is now at B.C. Law School.

Birch45- I read your two comments here and I see nephew concerns about the social scene (your first entry) and Admin issues (second one). I doubt if your nephew was too bothered by the PR spin that you mention in the first one.

Which one was it? Both? The second entry suggests the real issue was the Admin, so I was confused trying to interpret what your nephew's real issue was and what is (or appears to be) yours. And since Admin covers such a vast area, what aspect of the Admin caused such heartburn that he would up and transfer?

I would just like to say that I have found the administration at Dickinson extremely friendly and helpful. Starting with questions during the admissions process, and covering the first 2 years as a student there, my daughter (and I ) have seen the administration bend over backwards to make us happy. Ranging from reslife issues, visits to student health services, financial issues and closed classes - those in charge have been more than helpful in resolving issues promptly and courteously. Everyone from the President and Provosts to the Deans, faculty and staff have been wonderful.

I just visited the campus the other day and it is a very pretty campus with very nice buildings, and lay-out. In fact, I was really blown-away by how nice it is, I was expecting much less!

I lived in Carlisle in the early 1980s...before the publication of the OFFICIAL PREPPY HANDBOOK. I wish that the handbook had been published when I lived there so I could have understood what people were talking ablout. Back then, the students were the personification of preppy.
