What do you think of people who fence? (stereotype)

...really really cool. Love the movement, the look. My friend looks awesome when he fences

I think its awesome too. I tried fencing for a while but it just required too much money and commitment which I didnt have at the time so I stopped.

it looks fun

it looks awesome. i wish i could do it. how do you become involved with fencing?

^get lessons.

one of my friends used to take some at the comm. college

I love fencing. I fence foil, and I tried saber for a little bit.

Never tried it once, but I won't deny that it looks pretty interesting...

EDIT: It seems that I (along with some people here) have misread the OP, but I don't really have a stereotype for fencing, I don't really know many "fencers" in my life (if any, definitely none personally)...they're pretty chill people who like to slash things.

I don't know any fencers. My school doesn't have a team.

If it did, I would love to try it. I think it looks very interesting. My school would never get a fencing team, though. Not enough money, and more likely than not there wouldn't be enough interest. (Although things like the bowling team are successful, so one never knows...)

I think they are the most awesome people in the world...

Especially when they fence foil...

like me.

Fencing is rad, so fencers must be too.

Useless in real life. Kendo's much more perfectionist.. but more useful.

Yeah, I did both.

^lot's of sports are useless in real life, that doesn't make them any less fun (except soccer, it's useless in every sense of the word)

I disliked it heavily when, while watching women's saber in the Olympics, the women shrieked like banshees every time someone got stuck.

**Fencing as a concept is awesome, but the whole
"electric fencing" really sucks away a lot of its
essence.

Fencing was originally meant for training with the
Short Sword or other blade wielding weapons. By
making the playing field this short strip, it takes
away a lot of its authenticity.

So my question is, does anyone know of any form
of fencing that DOESN'T involve a narrow strip?**

Saber looks pretty boring. Foil and epee look much more interesting, because there's more strategy. I only know one person who fences; our school doesn't have a fencing team.

I'm from one top fencing high schools in the nation and although I'm not a fencer myself, I really envy those guys.

Not because they have the opportunity to swing swords and move in a funny manner, but because they're all going to Princeton, Harvard, etc.
Each year like 5 fencers goes to a top school. HYPS, Brown, you name it.

Really cool hobby, but I consider it an elitist hobby like golf....but more elite. If I wasn't lower class I would love to be playing it, but it takes too much money and it's not active around here ( texas)

I think what the poster meant by useless in real life meant it doesn't really help your health like maybe conditioning in soccer or track does. It's more of a hobby in my opinion, because it doesn't take the same core qualities the stereotypical sport takes.

proletariat2: "Saber looks pretty boring"? have you ever seen saber? it's probably the least boring of the three... and to Rh., fencing definitely doesn't have to be an elite sport. i mean, i go to an inner city school where 98% of us live below poverty level and we all get free lunch, and we have a fencing team. granted, our equipment doesn't always work and we have to share jackets, but the point is, it's not just for the upper classes. and it takes a bunch of core qualities - endurance, strength, speed, flexibility, more endurance... especially for those bouts that take 15 minutes. swords get pretty heavy. sorry for being defensive.

It seems sort of elitist...
I mean that's not to say it doesn't look fun.
But I've always perceived it as such, I've never even seen actual fencing.
But... don't kill me on my opinion...
