What do you think of going to univeristy in Europe (for undergrad)?

Hey all,

I'm a rising senior with ambitious plans to say the least. Basically I've started to really like the idea of maybe doing my undergrad education in Europe.

I've stumbled upon Amsterdam University College (Homepage - Amsterdam University College) or AUC for short. I love Amsterdam, I went there once when I was younger for a week and really it was the first city in my life where I appreciated beauty in a city. All my childhood my parents took me and my siblings around Europe or Israel (where I grew up) and learning about how beautiful cities are but I never understood it until I got to Amsterdam. I've done research papers about it and read informational websites and everything- I am in love with the city (And not for drugs or prostitutes haha).

It's a 3 year honors college that teaches in English in Amsterdam. It's a liberal art school (So wide variety of subjects) with an emphasis on the sciences. The tuition for Non-EU students is about 11,000 Euros (so about $16,000) but on their website (which includes costs for furnishing dorms, books, and living expenses- "food and leisure") the website says they estimate the cost per year to be 20,000 Euros or $30,000 a year which is a lot I admit.

Basically I'm applying to schools in the U.S. but this school is VERY intriguing to me. I love the international focus, broad study program with emphasis on science, and the city of Amsterdam. I've already scanned the website front to back and talked to a few students and asked their opinions.

What would you say to your kid if he offered this as an option? What advice or thoughts do you have about this?

My daughter toyed with the idea of going to school in Europe and then decided it was too far. I would have supported her decision had she made that one.

I think you want to think about where you might want to live. A degree from another county complicates the job search a bit–especially if your goal is to come back to this country.

I have given it thought, but the farthest I am thinking is studying abroad. I was thinking of attending ETH Zurich, perhaps I can study abroad. Then later do some post doc research there. The tuition is cheap ~$1600 per year. But I have read the living expenses are expensive.

I know a young man that did two years of college in the US and then decided to finish up in Holland. The college wouldn’t take his credits but did accept him. It was actually less expensive for him to go to college in Holland for four years then it would be to finish the final two at his private college in the US. I believe tuition is only $7,000 a year. His college is recognized as one of the best in his field. He loves it.

I don’t see anything wrong with it.
