Sooooo yeahh.. College apps are due soon and I'm freaaking out about this essay business. I've been trying to brainstorm topics (for the common app essay), and the main one that sticks out in my mind is about why I'm choosing nursing as my career of choice.

Basically, the story behind why I'm choosing nursing is when I was younger I remember watching a documentary on mistreated patients in hospitals. There's this one woman's story I remember quite vividly; she had suffered a stroke and while hospitalized, none of the hospital workers even seemed to acknowledge, let alone genuinely care for her. I remember being so affected by this story and I can honestly say this is one of the main reasons I'm choosing nursing.

That's pretty much the topic. But I feel like adcoms will think its cliche and corny.. So please tell me what you think. Should I drop the topic? Change it? Not even bother applying to college?

Depends on how you tell it. I’m worried that it might make you seem naive, like how every girl has that vegan and Indigo Girls phase after watching some documentary on factory farming or something. Why not talk about how that idea started in your head (the documentary), how it’s been tested (maybe some skepticism from family+friends?), and in the end why you think it’s still right for you?

Thanks for the insight, wanton. I never really thought of that. Do you think it would be better if I talked briefly about the documentary deal, then transitioned into a real life experience? For example, about a year later my mother was treated badly at a local hospital when she was ill. Would that be ok?
