What changed between freshman and sophomore year?

Great upward trend, but if your rank is hurt by that first year, the trend won't matter at top colleges.

I'm in the same boat.
freshman yr - 2.93
sophmore yr - 2.79
junior yr - 4.00 uw 4.4 w with 3 AP classes
senior yr - who knows? but I'm signed up for 5 APs

My grade trend is my own fault because I really did not care for school or even worry about college during my 9-10 grade years. I was a rebel kid lol..
= P

I don't know what other people will think of that. maybe like me, that you didn't see the importance your freshman year.

yay for better GPA's

Well...freshman year I had honors history and honors english.

Soph year - No honors or IB

Junior Year - one IB

I'm not looking to go to top schools, like HYSP.

Bump please

Colleges would rather see an upward trend than a downward trend, no doubt about that. But they'd also rather see consistent good grades throughout high school.

So I'm at a disadvantage?

great grades > upward trend > bad grades > downward trend

i think u still have a shot at some really good schools...if that is unweighted gpa.

Yeah that is definitely my unweighted GPA.

Some schools like Stanford don't look at freshman year, just a thought.

But doesn't Stanford want a challenging schedule, lots of IB Classes?

Hello SHS_Spartan -

Check out the forums for other colleges which discount freshman year. I saw a post once by someone who said she did way better in her admit results with those schools (she also had a weak freshman year). You'll also probably do better with holistic admissions versus big state-school numerical formulas.

You go to a school with a great sports program. Are you an athlete? If you do really well in your school's division in a sport, it could be a hook for top schools which are not super-competitive sports-wise.

In addition to targeting those schools, I think you still have a shot at other top tiers if you really do finish hs with a bang. Of course, you are competing with kids who didn't mess up freshman year, and lots of them get cut from top schools. Additionally, you are in competition with top students from much more competitive high schools (both public and private). SHS and EL are beginning to develop more of a track record with top schools, but are no where near the success of places like Millburn NJ, Hunter in NYC, Boston Latin, New Trier...or even Mercer Island or Garfield. Then of course there are the Andovers of the world. But don't give up. You may need to apply to more than the average number of schools with your stats.

If you have a great application overall, and really do well this and next semester (you can do it!), I am confident that even the best colleges will give you a look.

Good luck! :-)

"

I think this might not be advantageous as colleges will consider this as grade inflation as you made your courses less rigorous but it will be to your adavantage if you have some strong ECs at the UC admissions because you get credit for at most 2 Hons classes for Sophomore and a total of 5 hons. classes.

it's an impressive upward trend, but wow, that GPA started off really low.

here is mine....

Freshman-3.2
Sophomore-3.2 1 AP
Junior-4.375 3 AP

this i weighted...how is this going to hurt my chances at some school, its not like im trying to get into harvard or anything im more interested schools like St.Mary's College Maryland, UMBC, and Washington College. How am I looking?

what's am unweighted GPA? and how do u find out ur GPA. PS i'm a freshman, so my apologies in advance :D

in some schools if you take AP, IB, or Honors classes they might give you more credit in your GPA then a regular class. GPA is usually done on a 4 point scale where an A is a 4 B is a 3 and so one. In my High School they give you a 5 for an AP A and 3.75 for an AP B. So even though a 4.0 is the top score on an unweighted scale you can get above that with weighted.
