What do you think of this?

D25 course selection for this year.

  1. Choir—> likes to sing
    2.Hon Humanities
  2. AP Calc AB
    4.AP Bio
  3. PE
PE–> needed for graduation. Also a little physical exertion in between periods will help her focus.

She volunteers 2 hours /week outside of school. Learning coding outside of school. Plans to join key club and women in stem club in school.

Please share your thoughts if this looks okay.

Ok for what ? u gave a snippet and no context. . Make sure her counselor looks at her schedule.

Can’t help until more context is given. So this is for a rising HS Soph? What schools is the student targeting?

Schedule seems to be missing English (maybe social studies if Humanities counts as english) and Foreign Language.

Honors Humanities? Is this an English class?
Foreign language? History?

If she is targeting the UC’s, she needs 4 years English, 4 years Math, 3 years Foreign Language, 2 years of History including European or World History plus US History, 3 years of a Lab science (Bio/Chem/Physics) but preferably 4 years, 1 year of Visual/Performing Arts and 1 year additional College prep courses from any of the subject areas which could include Economics/Psychology etc…

2 AP’s Sophomore year looks rigorous enough but clarify the Honors Humanities and also if FL is going to be taken.

Do you think it is rigorous enough? We hope to have her do a STEM college course in the future. Since she is my first I am not sure if I have chosen rigorous ones. I see students around me taking 3 APs and 4 APs. APs in their freshman year even. Her dad says the course is not having enough APs . I disagree with him. I feel like this is enough. She will be a Sophomore this year.

It’s missing a foreign language and either English or Social Studies which makes it not nearly rigorous enough. APs or no APs.

Is there a limit on the # of AP’s she can take as a HS Sophomore? Many schools limit these courses for Freshman and Sophomores.

Rigor depends upon what is offered at her HS and how many of these courses are taken by the top students. She will reviewed in the context of what is offered at her HS. Colleges will not automatically favor students that take the most AP classes. It is more about quality (getting good grades in the classes) vs. quantity.

My advice is have her take a rigorous class schedule based on her interests. If she is interested in a subject then she should do well in the class.

English is a hard requirement for the UC’s and even the Cal States, so what is her full schedule? Also I would not just be targeting the UC’s, since they have gotten extremely competitive for admission. She will need to expand the schools she is interested in applying but maximizing the UC a-g course requirements will make her competitive at all colleges.

Our High School’s mantra is for the kids to be “challenged but not overwhelmed” meaning to take the most rigorous classes that they, specifically can handle and still manage/do well. I would have her meet with school counselor to make sure nothing is missing or being overlooked as well and take a look at some of the requirements for specific schools she might be interested in looking at to see if she will have the right courses.

The most important thing is to make sure your child is taking all their core subjects - math, English, science, history, and foreign language. I don’t see English, history, or FL.

As noted, rigor is all relative to what is offered at your child’s HS. Talk to the guidance counselor. They will be the best person to guide your child in their course selection.

Is this a block schedule? If yes, what do you think she will have second semester?

Just spitballing here, but what does she hope to do?

One hopes by HS that the student is doing the choosing in consultation with others.

It’s lacking core courses.

Ap Calc AB (3 trimesters)
Ap Biology (3 trimesters)
Concert Choir (1-2)
Spanish 6 ( done after this)
Hon Humanities 1-2
World History 1-2
Racquet Sports 1-2

Sorry missed some subjs this is the exact schedule. Do you think this is rigorous enough for a future some degree.

What year is she in? APs are not for everyone. Is she- looking to go to W Michigan or Michigan, etc.

You’ve given no context - year in, overall # of APs, GPA, etc.

In the end, you have to do what’s right for the kid. What you want doesn’t = what’s right meaning - not everyone is capable of taking and crushing 12 APs.

In our HS, you could take one the first year and I think two the second year - and I don’t know the #, but I’m guessing 90% of kids are taking four or less over their four years.

But again - we have no context - from the year in school, etc. Make sure she gets with her counselor and you are taking what the school requires to graduate. Then find your college, go on the admissions page and see what they recommend, typically 4 years English, math, as well as a science and foreign language requirement.

Anyone having done Calc AB is more than fine for nearly any college in America btw - but we still don’t know what year she’d headed into.

You need to plan for the student, not the parent - and ensure they have the right schedule with the right level of rigor for them.

You should be working with a guidance counselor. Even to get guidance here, you need to give us waaaaaay more info.

Grade headed into

UW / W GPA

Test score if has

Schools she’s considering - ie. there’s a difference between Harvard and Arkansas, etc. of what she’ll need.

You sent random details - so i’m not even sure what we’re being asked to address.

Thanks

Of course she will be able to go to college and get a degree with these classes…at how selective of a college depends on a number of factors. Your D should be speaking with her HS GC about overall rigor. She should be targeting 4 years of classes in each of the 5 core subject areas (Eng, SS, Sci, Math, FL). She should take the highest level of classes so that she can be successful academically, and still have a healthy balance of academics, social/family life, and activities (which could mean not the absolute highest rigor).

Your HS should have a School Profile online, or available from the HS GC. Look at that to see how your D’s 4 year course plan will stack up against her peers. That School Profile should show number of APs and honors classes that students take at said HS, among other stats.

She will be a sophomore this yr. We are hoping for to get into any UC, preferably UCSD or UC Irvine. Or let me get greedy USC :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Her GPA was 4.0 last yr. She took Hon English last year which is why she was eligible for Hon Humanities this yr.

How do I look up the school profile online. Pls can you share. Thank you !

If available, it’s usually in the College Counseling section of the school website. Or Google “XYZ HS School Profile.”

She’s a 10th grader and is taking Calc AB. Yeah - as long as you do the required UC classes, she’s way ahead of pace - way ahead.

Subject requirement (A-G) | UC Admissions (universityofcalifornia.edu)

Thank you, this is very reassuring. Just knowing that I. am kind of on ok path makes this better.
