Still waiting to hear from the academy...being it was 01/26 when the last teacher rec. went through...we wait by the mailbox.
On January 27th DD get's a call for 4yr NROTC award to VMI.
Does anyone have any experience with the NROTC at VMI?
We are scheduled to visit end of March but will trek on for a CVW in MD if need be.
As to these CVW's is a letter involved? She has a friend in the class of 2009 that would shadow her.

VMI?

<----- Rolls around on the floor laughing hysterically.

Well, what did you expect? ;)

If you are going to laugh explain yourself.
DD chose VMI for she want's the military lifestyle and she doesn't want any other academy other than Naval.
At least VMI has lots of marching band opps for her.
I suppose you think she should go Harvard?
She knows that the wild child will come out in a reg. civilian school.

The CVW is by invitation only- the admissions board sends the letter out, however if you are interested in having your daughter attend (which is a great opportunity) then speak to your BGO- sometimes they can help get a CVW arranged.

As for shadowing with a friend, the RSVP did not indicate that a sponsoring plebe could be requested- however I would ask that question of your BGO as well.

It may be too late, but she might consider USMMA - they are always looking for qualified females - especially those with band experience! Give Admissions a call. As for VMI - it is really tough on girls. I recommend a visit - we thought it looked like a prison.

Lighten up, Francis.

I laugh at VMI because I went to USNA. There's nothing more to my post than that.

Sheesh. Some people need a sense of humor.

WIN84-where do you live? I'm just asking because you say "trek" down to CVW. And I want to know if you are from a competitive area. Oh yeah, and the whole thing with CVW is that they invite candidates qualified to compete for Admissions, so if you just turned in your teacher rec...

Zaphod- Ahhh, good to hear from everybody's favorite cynic :-)

no, no, Zaphod is not a cynic- he's just well seasoned and peppered and salted! ;)

Hell..... Here I was thinking I was just pointing out the obvious! :)

Why would anyone go to VMI? Second rate academics and a first rate butt-whooping? That you get to pay for? Nah, ROTC at State U sounds waaaay better . . .

DeepThroat

"the wild child will come out at a civilian school".

so she would choose vmi to avoid it? sounds like a huge waste to me.

LOL!

Thanks for taking the heat off me! :D

Interesting comment DT. Son was recently with some cadets of Citadel. He said the same thing. Unless, of course, you intend to stay in Carolinas for the rest of your life, then Citadel [or Virginia equivalent] provides for great job opportunities.]

There is also Norwich University in Vermont - Private, combining military tradition of nearly two centuries and a broad range of traditional undergraduate degree programs. Founded in 1819 as the first private military college in the United States and the birthplace of the nation's Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program. It has a corps AND regular college option.

This reminds me. Wonder what happened to that request to go forth with a forum for military colleges? We had a whole list of them. Guess they're still working on setting it up? Since not everyone can acheive an appointment to an academy, it is good that options are out there. I can't say much about VMI as son did not look there. Can tell you a bit about the Citadel if anyone has questions about that. I'd probably pm you with answers so as not to get Zap's motor running! LOL Hey Zap. GO NAVY buddy!

Congrats WIN84 to your daughter on receiving the scholarship. Hope she hears from USNA soon!!

We didn't take as long as Jan. to get those teachers recs.
Sadly she started in on them in August. BGO had to force them to finish.
As to whoop a##..she knows about that and that doesn't deter her.
She also made it in to IIT, Marquette and could have gone University of Chicago...She wants Navy ROTC, she want's to be an officer in the Navy.
USMA was all over her..they ordered her dodmerb.
As to the academics..interestingly enough VMI has been voted #1 Public Liberal arts college by US News and DD would not be too far out of her range at VMI-Nothing like a big fish.
I was just wondering if you thought it was an good alternative.
By the way-DD said that with out the regimental structure..she Always Procrastinates (APS).

WIN84: Please, please have DD visit VMI while it is in session if you are seriously considering. I think it would be much more difficult than any of the service academies for a female due to their inbred structure - I would not recommend and would suggest ROTC instead. But USNA or USMA are the best pending choices! Hang in there!

;)

Sorry. I'm just a little bit biased! :D

WIN said, "I was serious...the waiting is hell" You betcha! And I can safely assume when you go to bed at night, it takes a long while to sleep and then its the first thing you think of in the morning. I know. It was awful to go through. Just do what I did. Drink alot. LOL My heart goes out to you. Hang tough. I agree with Weski, visit VMI for sure & see what your daughter feels for the place. They do overnights.

Biased with good reason Zap.

That's what were doing. She's doing a overnighter in March.
As to the idea of switching her scholarship...we don't know if that is a good idea.
It's not like they give you a scholarship and say..."go ahead now chose a school". She chose 3 and changed her mind on IIT-which is a great school but the extracurriculars were lacking.
She thought about the citadel but thought the shaved head would be too demeaning for a female..
She is all NAVY (Zaphor) born from a Navy woman and Marine so USMA or AROTC was totally out of the question.
I was just hoping someone knew what it was like for the NROTC students at VMI as well as being female.
Believe me she is not afraid of being outnumbered.
She has spent 4 years with the US Navy Sea Cadet Corps..mostly male and she is their ALPO-so she teaches the newbies drill.
I don't understand the inbred structure bit..
DD is different than most. Sometimes we wonder if she is ours.
She spent an hour 1/2 with BGO and when we came back he had tears in his eyes and said "Thank you for letting me meet your daughter".
She was born to lead. We just want her to be happy as well.
