What do you think? Take a stand.

Hi! I am a junior so this doesn't directly apply to me but this issue struck me as just kinda unfair. I have senior friends who work hard, take loads of AP classes(after taking the prerequisites which isn't as highly weighted), succeed and pass and then barely make top 10 or not at all because of two reasons. One, is that the valedictorian is a fresh transfer student who is dual enrolling at the community college and no one knew their existence. Another reason is all the other kids who take dual enrollment full time.

Its common knowledge that dual enrollment is way easier than AP in our neck of the woods but choosing AP was the way to go for those of my friends who wanted to go out of state.

and to be honest, there are some people who are dual enrolling in my own year that I personally know as not good students..(like unfair advantages on tests in various ways)

and then there is this one girl in my year who totally deserves valedictorian however we had a recent transfer student in my year too who is currently at that spot(in her old city, they allowed dual enrollment since freshman year, we have an age limit at ours) however her rank might also be threatened by those who did dual enrollment.

so back to seniors.. now my friend isn't gonna be sitting on the stage as she deserves. It will be an interesting valedictorian speech I predict for that transfer student knows no one being dual enrolled and recent transfer. (at least the transfer student in my year is in my class and i know her she is nice, she herself said that she would refuse the title of valedictorian -by the way someone else told me that.. i didn't ask)

So what do you think? should transfer students be included? what about dual enrollment kids?

Someone from my high school transferred to the rival high school a few years back to become their val. People got so mad, the school made a rule the next year that the val had to have been a student there for at least two years.

People are getting mad here too. Unfortunately, nothing has been done about it yet. Did people at your school write letters to the administration or something? how did they get it to change?

Oh, it wasn’t my school, it was the rival school where the class got screwed over. Yeah, just meet with the principal after getting a petition circulated. Since you aren’t a senior and aren’t on the brink of your val spot, it will seem more genuine, rather than just “I want to be val.” However, they wouldn’t pull this year’s val, and I doubt they’d pull yours if they spent half their HS years there.

well the transfer in my year only has been here starting this semester… yeah… best for me to start saying something now rather than next year…

Honestly, does the valedictory spot really matter that much?

Yes, anytime I have to fill out the awards section of a CV I put it first.

Its a honor I would like bestowed upon my hardworking friend. You know, I myself didn’t know what a valedictorian was until sophomore year. There are also some little for fun rivalries in our school… heh heh… It’s just nice is my friend get it.

How much does class rank matter to colleges in general?

This is why my school doesn’t have a valedictorian. Worthless honor.

I try to avoid taking stands whenever possible
Being noncommittal is my new thing

Is that why you always bat at 11?

Nah, bat at 11 because I’m too shite to bat anywhere else.

I think that the two years thing sounds right.

I am disappointed that your username is not “bealittledisturbed,” as I first thought.

My best friend and his twin brother (both will be in about 6 APs for each junior & senior year, with about 14 total APs each by graduation, both are probably Mensa-genuises) will be fighting for our valedictorian spot. However, my best friend thought ahead and took Spanish 1 his freshman year, allowing him to take 1 more AP than his brother. However, his brother shunned him for 2 weeks upon hearing this, so my friend might take one less AP, and then it’ll go down to SAT testing. The reason for this: my best friend was threatened with a throat-slitting while he slept, by his brother. His brother was serious and he’s taking this seriously. Talk about “cutthroat” academic competition… No, I wasn’t setting up for the pun, it just now came to me.
