anyone want to help with my post???

it seems like people that go to CC's have a better chance at being selected to more selective universities on transfer than people at larger universities...that makes NO sense...

not necessarily. but they do have an easier time with reasons for why they're leaving usually ;)

If you are talking about private universities, that is indeed wrong. More selective private universities within top 20 are most likely to choose someone transferring from a 4 year university than a CC.

However, it is true that Public universities do prefer CCs over those transferring from a 4 year university.

which is crap! to get into that higher university, you had to have stronger HS records/ect
just because you screwed off during 4 years of high school, then took the easiest college route ever, does not mean you're a stronger student than someone who worked during high school, got into a 4 yr school, and may have gotten lesser grades

unless you did well in HS and in CC, because then it might be financial reasons

Shoebox, people take different directions for different reasons (not just financial). Since the option is open to everyone there is nothing unfair about it. Everybody has to look at their own life and find the best option for them. This does not make them less intelligent, hardworking, deserving etc..

no but essentially you can get a 1.0 in high school, go to a CC, get a 3.5 and they'll take you...
someone else can get a 3.6 in high school, go to a 4-yr, get a 3.3, and not get in simply because a 4-yr is harder than a CC (and we all know it is)

Yes, but all circumstances are not equal in high school either. High school gpa is not a reflection of who you are as a person. Those people that did not make it in as freshman can still go the transfer route. Also most schools take into account that some schools are easier than others.

so...was my asessment of my current situation correct? (i.e. prospects...)

cowboy, what's your major at GT?

biomedical engineering and double major in economics

If you're getting great recs and bringing a 3.5 (pretty strong) from GT, then I'd say that Vandy would move from a reach to more of a decent match. If you said Emory, then it'd prolly be a fosho.

thanks for the help

Applying as a Communications Major from UT Arlington. I have an auto-transfer to Austin next year but I figured I would apply to some other schools just so I had a few more options.

HS GPA: 3.7 unweighted
College GPA: 4.0 after my first semester
SAT: 1260/1920
EC's: I'm currently doing an internship with a production company that's making a reality TV show. My high school ones aren't bad, but I'm not sure if they'll care.
Recs: I think they'll be very good. I'm also getting a reference letter from the producer of the show.

Schools:
UNC: Reject
USC: Reject
Emerson: Accept
Syracuse: Reject
Boston U: Probably Reject
Rice: Reject (haha probably while laughing at the application)

That's atleast my take. I applied to a bunch of reach schools because I don't really have much to lose as I'd be happy to go to UT Austin next year.

You need some more faith dude. I think you'll get in at BU, Syracuse, Emerson, and probably UNC. USC is also def possible. Good luck.

HS GPA: 3.6
College GPA: a nice 3.2 first semester probably (im engineering, give me a break =P)
Applying as: Sophmore
SAT: 1380 (720 math, woo)
EC's: lots of good HS ECs including 4 year varsity sports, 2 club leadership posistions, NHS, tutored at local elem. school 250+ hours over 4 years, girl scout, got selected/attended competative Naval Acad. Summer Seminar, NROTC scholarship recipient (turned down though due to medical reasons) not much in the way of college other than member of Society of Women Engineers (served on couple committees, fundraising, and act as freshman rep), Students Engineering Council, and im applying to be a Senator for the University SGA as Eng. rep...also raising money to do an Avon Breast Cancer Walk in May 2007 with my mom (6 year survivor =) its her third walk, my first...if you want info, PM me!)
Recs: im getting my high school counseler, my HS calc teacher (had for two years), my advisor/professor, and one more of a teacher next semester
Essays: i'd like to say they'd be killer, but in honesty, they're gonna be straight from my heart, and im passionate about attending UVA, so they'll be good =) im strong in english

Others: 8 HS APs, in-state for UVA

Schools:
UVA : Engineering
UT-Austin : Engineering

any thoughts?

danfromcanada, how is the CAP program working out for you?

Shoebox, your SAT is a good match for UVA, your high school ECs appear promising, and your course load admirable. However, even for an engineer major, a college 3.2 may hinge on the brink of tolerability for a public ivy. Assuming the recs you mentioned are solid and your essays stellar, you could be in the running for admission, but it would be a tough race since most top 50 schools prefer applicants with a 3.5 or higher, although many allow applications from students who obtain averages above a 3.0. I think if you wait it out another year, and achieve a higher gpa during the hiatus, UVA will descend from a slight reach to a safety.

UT is going to be considerably more challenging since it's out of state for you, and 95% of those who attend are Texas residents. Unless you have strong ties to Texas that you can milk on the admission essay, UT is an extremely difficult school to gain matriculation for any out of state applicant.

Best of luck though shoebox! Hope those schools work out for you asap!

Current College: Texas State University
GPA: 4.0 honors program (48 hrs)
SAT: 1140 cringe.....i took that sucker over 3 years ago.....should retake, but too busy to review
Best ECs: President of History Club, Secretary of a nationally recognized volunteer organization, several volunteer trips into Mexico, paid history tutor, intercollegiate military competition (year long practices from 5-7a.m.), Army Airborne School graduate, math club, work experience, recognized for a lot of high school activities but I'll save everyone the mundane task of reading them
Applying for what Standing: Junior
Intended Major: History
H.S. GPA: 3.97/6.0, (4.6 junior year and 5.4 senior year, which goes to show how abysmal my fresh and soph years were)

Applying to:

Johns Hopkins- Reject
WUSTL- Reject
Emory- Reject
Brandeis-Accept
UT-Austin Accept

The CAP program isn't all that bad. I know a lot of people who have dropped out of it already because they either like it here at UTA or just can't keep up the GPA. I'm doing pretty well this semester, and if I'm able to get into the program I want at UT then I would think the whole experience was worthwhile. It beats paying 30 grand to go to an out of state school that I wasn't all that interested in. I'm hoping I get into a few of the schools I'm applying to so I can go on the UT forum and tell the CAP kids there that there is a hope. hahaha. What made me mad is that I was offered summer admission to UT but I couldn't attend because it started in June and I would not have graduated from high school by then because the school year is over at the end of June. UT offered me this instead and at first I was VERY mad, but once you get here and start meeting people, you realize that it isn't a bad place to stay for a year.
