I’m a freshman considering transferring. I was accepted to my two safties, an itty bitty Tier 1 LAC in the middle of nowhere(< 1500) and a gigantic super-urban state school (25k+). I decided to go to the LAC (because of a very nice scholarship), but at this point I’m not to thrilled, because:

I really don’t like the culture of the school – I’m not really fitting into the social scene, which is frustrating. Most of the social life involves sitting in a room and getting trashed while watching a movie. I don’t drink, and it’s been hard finding people who I like who don’t drink. I’m also getting annoyed with the “preppy factor”.

I’m a liberal arts major at a science-oriented school. The course selections in my areas of interest (philosophy and history) are pretty small. People don’t seem very engaged in the philosophy classes I’ve been in so far (probably because they’re moving at a snail’s pace), though I’ve heard better things about history (which I wasn’t able to schedule because they conflicted with everything else)

I know things might get better second semester, but I plan on putting in some applications in for transferring 2006. I’m looking for schools that’s not huge (medium-sized or medium-small), either urban or with easy access to an urban area, and with solid departments in the liberal arts. (Obviously not every school I consider will fit every criteria, but that’s sort of the general idea.

I’m expecting a GPA for the semester between 3.5-3.7, any suggestions?

Currently I’ve been considering Brown and Haverford or Bryn Mawr, as well as maybe Barnard and Wesleyan.

(Sorry for the long post )
