What do you think?

Im looking at prep schools and I want to get some advice from people that know more than me about this stuff, because I want to make sure that when next fall comes around and I apply for schools that I dont pick all "reaches" and end up stuck at my public school. Also it wouldnt be the worst thing if I was stuck at Ridge, it was voted most comprehensive school in New Jersey and 12th Overall.

I know I have given a ton of info, but please take the time to help me out.

Community Service
In contact with the New Jersey Devils' Hockey In Newark program to help with spring and summer teams.

Also next year I am taking two honors classes, and on top of hockey I will be joining multiple clubs.

Some of the coaches I have already contacted are: Loomis Chaffee, Westminster, Hotchkiss, Taft, and Salisbury.

My hockey does not look amazing on paper, but my coach who went to trinity pawling and played divison 2 at suny plattsburgh said he thinks I might have a shot at some of the schools.

Last thing... I am currently a freshman, and would be applying next fall, most likely I would repeat sophmore year if I got into any of the schols.

forgot an import school, I contacted Delbarton which is a private day school in my area, and they have put me on their waiting list if anything opens up.

just bumping it because i did not get any posts

Just make sure you have something that makes you stand out, because there are sooo manny applicants. Keep in mind that stuff like good grades, some sort of EC, SSATs are all kind of like ‘requirements’, and you need an extra something for you to get in =)

But you’ll probably do fine. It’s really hard for international applicants (especially asians)

haha I would imagine

First off elite hockey camp doesn’t count as an EC because you dont have to be asked to go to the camp…on another note I believe you posted a link to yourself playing hockey on another thread… So I don’t think you will be fully re recruited for hockey but i do believe that it may help you to get in… I suggest you start getting involved in more ECs…otherwise i believe that if you start getting involved in more ECs and do some community service i think you will have a decent shot at some of these schools but remember tenth grade is very hard to get into

I am currently going to attempt to join alot of clubs and ECs such as Future Business Leaders of America, economics club, and this spring like I said will be doing volunteer work for kids in newark relating hockey (my passion). I dont understand what you mean when you said re recruited, that video I made was just something I put together after one of my tournaments. I understand it might be ore challenging to get in as a sophmore, but my freind who goes to Groton suggested that I wait a year to pull up my grades, excel in hockey, and apply early rather than completely late. I appreciate your advice, and any other tips you have.

Sorry, I meant to say I don’t think you will be a full hockey recruit but more of a hockey player that the coach would want but maybe b in his top 10 or some recruits which is why I believe getting more EC’smatters… although i do believe grades are a huge aspect i didnt have very good gradeswhen apply, my lowest was a B, i had 2 b’s,3 bplus’s, 1 A-,and all A’s in gym, art, ect…and my ssat’ were a 70% which is why i believe EC’s count more because i had a lot of EC’s and i got into my first choice and a for loomis I am on a 5 person wait list… Somy advice would be to not stress next year, and visit many schools, I know that starting fall you will almost have no time to visit school because of hockey, which is exactly why i did the majoriy of my school visits in the summer last year… I sugest you do the same… Visit ore schools thatare not on your list as of now, I would also consider NMH,Choate,LVILLE, St.georges, and berkshire as a safety for you… Good Luck next year, feel free to ask more questions…

As far as recruiting I don’t know even if I was recruited for hockey, if it would be a school I would want to go to. For example my friend got recruited to the Hill School, but he has chosen not to go because he rather stay at home and play junior hockey. What I am hoping is that through contacting the coaches I can start a relationship, and let them know that one of my reasons to come to the school is because of hockey. Also I don’t know exactly how it works, but some of the schools might have their own tournaments for recruiting which I could attend. I am glad that you mentioned ECs because before my posts on this site, I did not realize how little I have under that category. I am contacting many of the schools that I will be applying to next year, right now, hoping that I can do what you did and visit them either now or in the summer. I might be wrong, because I am only going off of internet ratings but I don’t know if I would pick Choate or Lawrenceville as a safety considering my credentials. I am yet to take the SSAT, and I am hoping that if I study really hard for that I can get a high score and that might look appealing.

Im on my schools website looking at ECs and I am overwhelmed by how many clubs there are. Do you have any suggestions on what ECs they like to see? Also is it better to have a ton of ECs or a few that you really focus on?

Student goverment and model UN are looked upon very well… As well as taking up an instrument-if possible… As for getting a good relationship with the coaches I think that is one of the most important aspects of the process- it helped me extremeley… I wasn’t saying choate or LVILLE was a safety for you but schools you should look at… Where as I said you should apply to berkshire as a safety

oh I understand now, One thing I noticed was that you mentioned St. Georges. I looked up their hockey teams and noticed both Varsity and JV are losing a lot. This makes me wonder whether I should be looing for losing hockey teams, because after all my goal is not to go to the NHL but have hockey help me get into school.

The thing about schools where there hockey team loses a lot, you can get recruited easier, cause they need people too bring up there program. Where as a school like Choate has so many kids for hockey, a normaly really good hockey player wouldn’t stand out

My advice: go to andover! I went to ridge for a year and then applied and went to andover as a new lower. While I realize it’s not on your list, I’m still going to recommend it. As a current senior, I couldn’t be happier with my decision! Best of luck.

HAHA how ironic that you went to ridge, i just think my chances of going to Andover are slim to none, but trust me if I got in I would go in an instant.

Well there’s definitely hope! I got into andover with like 4 A’s 3 B’s and a C =p however I did get 94th percentile on my SSAT… and a volleyball recruit. So I’m kind of in the situation you were in?

ya, the more and more I hear about these schools, it sounds like they arent just looking for perfect students, that they are willing to take the well rounded kid over the genius.

hockey6ridge- yes they are, i wouldn’t have gotten in/waitlisted at some of the schools i applied to if i wasnt well rounded.thats always what there looking for… in your case i would visit maybe 8 schools and choose 5 to apply to

seperate from the rest of our topics, I was wondering if anyone knows how partying and drugs are at prep school. One of the reasons I want to leave public school is because kids arent focused and get caught up in partying. I am not completely against it, I just want to make sure if my parents are paying for me to live away from home that there is a reason for it. I am not ignorant and I know it goes on, but I dont know if its almost worse because some of the kids are so wealthy. I am hoping that by looking at some of the top schools, that they will be fairly strict with partying.
