What do you think?

I am an OOS student and I'm just wondering what my chances are for getting into Kelley as IUB - more specifically, do you think I would get any scholarships?

This is from the Kelley website:

"For fall 2009 admission, the criteria will be as follows:

Admitted to IU Bloomington and indicated business as your intended major
ACT composite score of 29 or SAT composite of 1270 (including only math and critical reading sections)
Top 10 percent of high school class or 3.6 GPA (on a 4.0 scale)"

From what you have written, it looks like you will be offered direct admission to Kelley. If your question regarding scholarship money refers to Kelley scholarships, I’m afraid your scores wouldn’t qualify for the Kelley Scholars program. However, it is possible that Kelley could offer you one of the smaller business scholarships. These are generally in the 1-2K range.

If you are offered admission into the Hutton Honors College, there are more scholarship opportunities that go along with that.

And finally, there are automatic awards for OOS students who meet certain score/GPA criteria. This is where you will probably garner the most help. Check out this web page: [Automatic Academic Scholarships: Types of Scholarships: Office of Scholarships: IU Bloomington](http://scholarships.indiana.edu/automatic.html)
and look at the IU Distinction award at $8K per year. Your 1300 SAT qualifies you for this award.

IU’s website is a wealth of info. I’d recommend that you become familiar with it and above all, APPLY EARLY. Like September/October. Seriously. Lots of kids with great stats applied late in the cycle and wound up waitlisted.

Good luck!

Thanks for the information - I took your advice and did a bit of research on the school’s website. When looking on the scholarship pages, I came across this –
Before You Apply—Scholarship Requirements

To be considered for the Kelley Scholars Program, students must meet the following guidelines and provide all necessary documentation to complete the application:

Be admitted to IU Bloomington on or before November 1 of the senior year in high school.
Indicate a business major as the intended major on the application for admission (see application packet for list of majors).
Rank in the top 10 percent of class*.
Score at least 1300 SAT (combined critical reading and math) or 30 ACT.
Be a citizen of the United States.
Accept direct admission to the Kelley School of Business.
*If the high school does not provide class rank, the IU Office of Admissions will recommend for consideration those students who have appropriate test scores and strong academic performance.

It says to be considered that you need at least a 1300 on combined SAT (what is exactly what I have) - Do you think that I would have a shot at this scholarship?

Also, I was looking and I could not find the cost for OOS tuition. Does anyone know what the final cost comes to for a year (all expenses). Sorry if it can easily be found and I just happened to look over it.

Re: the Kelley Scholars Program, it is HIGHLY competitive and most of those chosen in the past have been instate students. My OOS son exceeded both the ACT minimum and the class rank minimums and was not chosen to even compete for the program. Of course, anything is possible and perhaps something in your application might jump out at them.

Re: the cost of attendance, check out this pdf file on the bursar’s web page. http://bursar.indiana.edu/publications/08-09%20Fee%20Schedule.pdf</a>
Note that Kelley direct admits get to pay $1080 more per year.

The pdf doesn’t include the cost of room & board though. You will need to go to the Residential Life page to find those costs.

Best of luck to you. Apply to IU online as soon as applications are accepted. Find out the procedure that your counseling office follows so that you can get your transcripts sent in as soon as you apply. Also, forward your SAT/ACT scores this summer. This is what my son did and he was accepted to IU immediately with an $8k/year scholarship . He then applied for direct admit (College of Arts and Sciences) and was accepted. Finally, housing. Got it done early and he got his first choice. He had been accepted and finished with the collegd stress before most seniors had begun applying.

He’s out of state, so the IU scholarship will cover room and board and his ROTC scholarship takes care of the rest.

Bottomline? Apply as early as you can.

Also, when he visited the college, he met with admissions (one on one), academic advisor for his major, and ROTC officers. Then he was able to put these names on his application.

I guess what I’m trying to ask is this: If you meet the score criteria for such a program, does IU look more at other things besides test scores? What do they rely on heavily in their deciding factors? Because honestly, I know my scores aren’t the best, but if they put me in range – will my high school grades, tough classes, EC’s, sports, tons of great leadership positions, etc., be what is looked at?

Here is the press release announcing the 2007 Kelley Scholars.
[Kelley Scholars announced at Indiana University: IU News Room: Indiana University](http://newsinfo.iu.edu/news/page/normal/5749.html)

As you can see, only one is OOS. Judge for yourself how you stack up against their credentials.

I misspoke earlier in this thread when I stated that my son didn’t even make the cut to apply for Kelley Scholars. He did apply and was notified that he didn’t make the cut for the interview phase. The letter said that there were over 300 applicants for 2007.

Good luck!

I think I remember Calcruzer saying something about the OOS Kelley Scholar being some individual with phenomenal accomplishments.

Anyways, it’s true that they mainly take in-state students. Cheaper to pay an in-state student’s tuition than an OOS student’s tuition.

True, that does make more sense that most students come from in state. Thanks everyone for your input.
