I just read this...I knew it was mentioned earlier, but I hadn't thought of making a thread...so now I'm curious. [:

New UC admissions policy gives white students a better chance, angers Asian-American community - San Jose Mercury News

Thankfully, I'm only half...but that's...gotta be devastating for the freshmen...:X

What do you guys think about it? I can't believe it! ...but then again, I did notice the numbers...>__<;;

I don’t think it applies to transfers.

^
No, it doesn’t. LOL. I just thought it was appealing…no more SAT Subject Tests! Whoo.

i didn’t put down my ethnicity…you guys did?

they better be scared…lol

Damn you round eye.

j/k

The subject of admissions and race/ethnicity is a tough subject. There was a CC’er who asked if he was a part the minority because he was Cambodian. Since it falls under the umbrella of Asian, he was a majority. Then for some reason, people started arguing over issues about ethnicity and impoverished backgrounds that was completely off-topic. You can PM me for my AIM SN if you want to chat about this subject.

The fact that they even consider race when making an admission decisions is bull.

Here’s a thought: Pick the best and most qualified applicants, not the ones that help meet a quota.

One of the current issues is that applicants use the personal statements as a backdoor to mention their under represented status.

theyre not considering your race. theyre just cutting certain SAT req’s.

if admit rates of asians go down just bc of cutting the SAT’s then that says something about the rest of their application. also, it’s only going to make more time for them to kick ass at something else.

I got scared there for a sec, but then if it’s only for the freshman…hehe.

I’m an Asian and if I go to a UC all the freshman will be my age…and I don’t like most Asian guys. haha

cutie,
the reason why cutting SAT’s hurts asians is due to the fact that asians have consistently scored higher on the SATs compared to other races. taking the SATs away puts them on the same level as other people in terms of GPA. and we all know how inflated GPAs can get. i remember at my hs, tons of people with high GPA’s weren’t legitimate. and what really exposed it was their SAT scores. but it doesnt really matter anymore because they all went to a 4-year out of hs and have flunked out.

chibi: Did you happen to have any drug using party animals in AP/Honors classes? I knew these 2 chicks who would get plastered yet maintain 4.0+ GPAs. Once the SATs rolled around, it was epic lulz. Barely managing 1000/1600s.

yeah man, it just didnt make sense how some stoners in my class consistently got A’s on their tests with bloodshot eyes and no stress from “studying”. maybe berdy can answer that.

yes i understand that asians do well on the SAT’s lol and that it will “hurt” them but they shouldnt rely on a single test as their ticket of admission, or at least as a swaying factor. if they dont get in then maybe they should have been more well-rounded/stood out/whatever.

and about being on an equal playing field, isnt that what we want?

also, one would think that for most: a high SAT relates to a high GPA. idk of many asians or any other race really that does really well on the SAT and then poorly or even just average in the classroom. SAT usually seems to be just a repeat of a high GPA, or a cushion for a UC-GPA that is not as good as it could be due to the AP cap.

lolol. I hear Bob Marley whenever I see one of Beardy’s posts. I don’t want to generalize but SATs often separated the Patricians from the Plebeians at my school.

btw chibi, I spoke over the phone with a Cal admissions rep. the other week. I had a question about addressing changes/mistakes on the application. I had originally planned to take a 3 unit PE class for my General Ed. AA, but switched to 2 single unit PE classes. This would have no outcome on my IGETC, 60 units ect ect. The rep. explained this was extremely minor and did not need the Fax/Snail Mail change report. I also asked about incorrectly filling out my supplemental form ( Put the wrong session for a class in the Major Pre-Req form -________- ). She also said that this was minor and would have 0 effect on admissions. I hope this information puts you at ease regarding the situation with filling out AP scores incorrectly.

i think it evens the playing field, because minorities shouldn’t have a lot of opportunities in a state where minorities are the majority compared to the rest of the country

im not in the mood to debate with people because quite honestly, this shat doesnt affect me. lol

nijikon, thanks man. yeah my counselor said it shouldnt be a big deal. the amount of credit i get from that one ap credit score is 1, lol. and it’s insignificant since ill have 60 without it. but thanks man.
