What do you think?

I am trying to decide between three schools. William and Mary, Clemson, and Furman. I am going to major in history. I live in SC so I get in-state for Clemson and Furman. As far as costs go, I can go to Clemson for around $10,000 a year. I have a $25,000 scholarship to Furman so I can go there for around 25,000. And I don't have any money to William and Mary. I was also accepted to Clemson's honors college. However, I think William and Mary is more prestigious than both of them. What do you guys think I should do?

I don’t think that W and M is that much more “prestigious” to justify the extra cost.

Clemson sounds like a great deal especially with honors. You will likely get the royal treatment (smaller classes with profs, priority enrollment, honors dorm-if available)

I would go to Clemson for sure.

Thanks for your opinion.

I agree that W&M isn’t so much more prestigious than Clemson or Furman is, to make it worth that extra cost. Yes, W&M is higher ranking, and yes, it’s a bit more prestigious, but Clemson is also really good, and you’re getting a great deal there. Furman is also a very good school, but a slightly less good deal than Clemson. And Clemson honors - that’s great.

If you love W&M, that’s a different story. But if you like it more or less the same way you do Clemson, I’d have you give Clemson a serious look.

The students and environment and national reputation at W&M are all vastly different than the other schools. It depends on what you are looking for but W&M is a special place that very few have the opportunity to experience. If money issues can be handled you may not want to miss this fork in the road of life. It wont come by again.

Good luck

You can study history for 10,000 a year or 25,000+ a year.

Your choice.

Assuming costs rise 5% a year at each school, how much debt will you (not your parents) have after 4 years?

Clemson is a fantastic school with fantastic sports teams and school spirit/pride. If sports are of any interest to you, this is a very easy choice.

I honestly don’t think W&M has such more “prestige” over the others to justify the cost…

blaken91, check your math.

if you have 25k/year for Furman, it means that you won one of the very prestigous schollies. If you are this good, you should also have the Palmetto. And the state will give you another 5k. Bottom line, you will get a Fed Loan for abt 5$ per year (which FU will do) so your total cost will be 20$ for the whole 4 years. plus $1000 stipend for a trip abroard.

IF you have 6k per year for 25k per year. Its a no brainer, go to Clemson.

If you want to study history and you have the Hollingsworth, its a no brainer go to Furman. Theres alot of prestige and other things you will get if you are a Hollinsgworth scholar. Take my word on this from a person who is very close to the Hollingsworth process.

You tuition award letter should explain this clearly. If not give then a call
