What do you think?

I am a senior at a small, prestigious private liberal arts college
Sociology major, applying to Sociology MA programs for Fall 2010
Overall GPA: 3.10
Last 2 years: 3.01
Major GPA: 3.37
GRE: 1200 3.5AW (I don't know what happened with the writing, I know I'm a very good writer, am submitting writing samples)
I am conducting my own independent study research project and fielding a survey at school
I know I will have good recommendations from my professors

I have applied to UVA, UMD, American, Brandeis, UDEL, GW, Penn State, UNC Charlotte, UNC Wilmington and BU

I'm worried because of my low GPA I won't have a chance at any of these places, should I apply to some other schools with lower admission standards before its too late?

My schools is known for grade deflation and they do send a letter with all transcripts stating that grades from here are typically lower than normal universities, but I'm not sure they'll pay any attention to that

I just don't want to be left in a few months with only rejections, I need to get in somewhere

Thanks!

Admission committees will definitely pay attention to the letter accompanying your transcript.

In fact, we already know which schools do not inflate grades. We’ve been at this a while, I assure you.

I don’t know too much about the whole “grade deflation” issue, but (forgive me for being direct) seems to me 3.1 GPA is pure bad…

I mean, deflate from 3.9 to 3.7 is somewhat acceptable, but to 3.1? in liberal arts major? I don’t think there should be any excuse to that.

Along with the fact that you only scored 3.5 on writing, they won’t have much faith in you.
(Don’t say anything like “I know I’m very good writer” to the schools, it only worsen the situation)

Again forgive me for being rude.

I agree that KLP’s GPA is still low, as he himself mentioned, but you are being a little unfairly harsh Mr.Zoo. The Writing portion of the GRE is (in my opinion) a terrible measure of writing ability, and KLP didn’t stated that he/she was going to say “I’m a good writer”, KLP stated that he/she was going to submit writing samples–which is exactly the right thing to do.

KLP, just curious, what college is it? Is it Reed or Swat? You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to. I’m curious to know which colleges send letters like that (about grade deflation, that is). I mean some colleges are already well known for grade deflation and grad schools know them well…even though there are people who will argue here (or on Parents forum) ad infinitum against such…
