How formal or casual do you go for your auditions? Obviously Dance is just sweats and a T-shirt...but still.

T-shirt may be okay - but sweats would be highly frowned upon any of the places I'm familiar with. Several places specify nothing baggy. Jazz pants would be a good investment if you don't already have them.

There is a whole thread about audition attire - but, as expected, it focuses more on the ladies. And - there are places that are exceptions to the rule; however, I think an IRONED button down shirt, and dress slacks is the way to go for men.

tom<3avenueq . . . My S (a freshman MTD at Otterbein) wore black dress slacks, and a colored button-down shirt for all his auditions and yes it was ironed :) A far as dance clothes for guys, my son is a dancer so he was used to this but I would recommend a dance belt under a pair of jazz pants. These pants tend to be tight fitting to the body and it is impossible to look cool with a boxer line underneath. Tight briefs might work out if you don't want to go the dance belt way but don't wear white briefs, only black - the white ones show through the jazz pants. Oh, and BTW, dance belts and guys jazz pants can be purchased online at www.discountdance.com Also go with a sleeveless tank top that is fitted rather than loose. When you dance they (whoever is running the auditions) want to see the shape of your body and they can't see this if everything is loose and baggy. When you dress well for an audition it gives the impression that you are serious about what you are doing , even if you are only a beginner dancer. Good luck with your auditions next year. We'll be on the audition circuit next year with my D. Maybe we'll run into each other.

I wore some slacks and an ironed shirt with a sweater...the other guys varied greatly from suits with a tie to jeans and a tee shirt, jeans and a nice dress shirt etc. I was surprised at how casual and how formal some people were. I would say slakcs and a nice button up shirt would be fine. For the dance I wore thin, close-fitting sweat pants and a tight white shirt. Again, others varied from gym shorts and tees to wife beaters and jazz pants. Most of the students who were doing the dance portion with us wore jazz pants or very tight thin sweat pants or something of that nature.
I hope this helps! I was totally clueless last year since there isn't much up here about guys.
