What documents exactly do I need to MAIL colleges if I'm using Common App?

I've read in some places that we (we, I mean, the school/counselor) needed to physically send transcripts to colleges, but again, that makes me question the point of Common App if that's true, after all, what is it for, if we need to send both online and physical copies of documents? But anyways, I wanted to know which documents I need to send through mail to colleges, if any, or if I just need my counselor to send them all through the good and ol Common App. Cheers!

It is more about your school’s (and/or the college’s) policy in submitting transcript than CommonApp. CommonApp only handles your application, supplements, recommendation, and counselor reports. You need to submit transcripts and test scores separately as you only self report grades and scores on CommonApp. Many schools uses online services such as Parchment to handle the transcript submission.

But apparently the school counselor can send the transcripts online through common app, along with the Secondary School Report…

The school counselor may include your transcript in the school report, however, the adcom may not expect it that way and mark it off on their check list. If you submit the application early, you may wait to see whether the adcom is considering that to be an official transcript or not. Note that an official transcript may require the signature of principal or an official stamp. The attachment from GC may be similar to the student copy that it is not official. Many high school would charge a fee for each official transcript sent. You probably want to ask your GC for the way your school handles transcripts for school applications.

Your school is generally responsible for sending your transcripts (grades) and any school-related recommendations. Most submit them electronically through the common app (they have access to do that), or some probably still snail mail them. It shouldn’t matter to you, but make sure your GC knows what colleges you have applied to and the deadlines for the application, and ask them to please send along the transcripts, GC recommendation, and teacher recommendations.

If you went to another high school prior to this one, ask your GC if they will put in both transcripts or if you need to do something. If you have external credits like college courses, you need to figure out if your GC should send them, or if you need to contact the other organization to have them sent.

^ For schools use Parchment, it is the student who take the initiative to submit the transcript. School would only upload the transcript to Parchment upon request. It is the student who submit the transcript online.
