What does a Dartmouth LL mean for me?

The odds of you getting into Princeton–or Harvard or Yale, for that matter–went up by orders of magnitude. Yes, it does mean you were in a sense “overqualified” for Dartmouth.

sigh When one receives an assured offer of admission from an institution, that institution becomes a safety school. Guaranteed admission sounds pretty “safe” to me.

This information is dated (2006), but shows the difficulty Dartmouth has in attracting cross admits over HYPS.

93% chose Harvard over Dartmouth
88% Yale
82% Stanford
81% Princeton

^^ I was going to bring that up. I asked my interviewer a bit about Dartmouth’s likely system, and he said while some are sent to the very top-top, many are sent to HYP ‘fringe’ students. A letter like that certainly makes a student feel like an institution wants them, and if they get a likely from D and he/she was considering another private or top state school, the letter can have a much more influential sway than to a Harvard cross-admit (so indicates the table). That being said, I know a Yale SCEA admit that didn’t get a Dartmouth interview or likely, but got a Columbia likely.

To tell you the truth, I wouldn’t put a ton of stock in the letter. I don’t want to take away from it (it certainly is a great indication), but many cases are different. Besides, if your stats were that good, you probably knew your chaces at HYP were good before you even applied.

Sorry to add onto this but I’m in a similar situation. I received a likely letter from Dartmouth some time ago and an invitation from Cornell to what is called “Diversity Hosting” and in the letter it said, “This special invitation is extended to you because of your strong academic and personal record and because you will be admitted to Cornell University’s Class of 2014”… I applied to a bunch of other schools among them Princeton and Yale and I am so nervous/excited to find out my decision. I have one question: (1) Are these responses from Dartmouth and Cornell any indication of my potential to be admitted at Princeton or Yale (or somewhere else… I applied to MANY schools).

^^ I forgot to mention that I was also deferred from Yale SCEA… :(

Ah, so many of the Dartmouth LL recipients were those deferred from Yale EA…

^^ really? is that true?

It actually makes some sense that many Dartmouth LL recipients were deferred Yale EA. Probably not many of those accepted EA bothered to send in their Dartmouth apps (unless they had sent them in already), and applicants who got deferred EA were presumably toward the high end of the nonadmitted pool. Finally, couple those points with the fact that a high percentage of the strongest applicants in the country (particularly those more interested in the East Coast, who would be less inclined to prefer Stanford) applied to Yale, and it all fits.

a LL from Dartmouth says little about your chances at Pton in my opinion. Each school is very different in their own right. For example I got into Caltech but outright rejected by MIT

i love how Dartmouth was labeled a safety school. hahaha

A dartmouth LL means that you are likely to get into Dartmouth.

It does mean that you are not an idiot; you are in the league of the ivies. Nothing else though.
