What does a guy wear to the shower room?

All you men out there.........Hey, silly question I know but what do you suggest for a guy to wear to the shower and back who is on an all male wing that is attached via open common space to the all female wing of a dorm? My soon to be freshman son asked for my input and I have no clue. Does he buy a robe (he is modest)and shower shoes? He will have to carry all his toiletries to the bathroom down the hall so what exactly do guys carry? He does have one of the plastic totes with handle and holes in it which I think he could use for inside shower but how does he carry shaver, cologne, t-brush, paste, deod, etc.? Do guys typically have a separate tote for shower stuff and one for the after shower stuff you take care of at the sink? He was looking at the Lands End Navy calf length robe (kind of like a spa robe but I don't know). Should he get a lighter one? I cannot picture him carrying all this stuff back and forth to the shower. How about when you have to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, do you typically have to put a robe on or slip on a pair of shorts? Any help here would be appreciated..

I hope someone answers this. I was wondering some of the same things in regard to my son who will be a freshman. He usually runs around the house in boxer briefs, so it will be interesting to see what he will wear when he heads to the bathroom?

You hit the nail on the head..........lets hope for some good advice here.

my daughter lived in a coed dorm-with coed bathrooms
in her dorm there were shelves that you could keep your bathroom stuff on, she also had a wire tote that she could bring into the shower with her.
Theoretically, she probably had flip flops for shower and either wore her pajama bottoms and tank into the bathroom or a bathrobe- but really that didn't last all year, because her robe is still here.
the showers are fairly large- think like at a nice campground.
When I used the shower there ( like at teh campground) I bring the clothes in that I am going to change into, and put those on after the shower.
For middle of night, it depends I would think on what he sleeps in.
if he is just going to be fast, I suppose a pair of boxer shorts would be enough, but if he sleeps in jockeys, that might be a little too much info.
So do they share a bathroom? Its interesting that it would be coed but not really

Some do T's and B's some don't care either way and some do the boxers and towel Not sure how useful it is but a bit of info

I lived in a dorm that was coed by floor, and the guys were on the 3rd and 4th floors. Because all the buildings on campus are crazy, the third floor was the first floor of actual dorms, and sort of a main entrance, so everyone waited for the elevators there. About 10 feet away there were entrances to the bathrooms and to the showers, and there were often guys and girls sitting in the hallway, talking. Even with all the people around, most of the guys I saw wore towels to the shower, and many of the others just wore boxers to the shower. I don't think I ever saw guys in boxer briefs or briefs, but I was usually trying to ignore what they were wearing. The girls are a bit more presentable in pajama pants/short shorts/t-shirts/tank tops.

Well, I believe they do not share bathrooms but the 2 sets of bathrooms area bout 40 feet away and there is nothing from stopping them I guess, unless their RA disallows it. I guess we will see...
Thanks and still waiting on some true-life experiences from the guys.

krazykow-how did they carry all their stuff(the guys)?

That's what I have been wondering as well. I know my niece, at Grove City College in PA, has one of those plastic shower totes and all the girls get to leave their personal belongings on shelves in the shower room. I was wondering how it worked with the guys. Personally it's hard for me to picture my son carrying a plastic shower tote...???? Any other suggestions?

fredmurtz2-no robes you saw? Too odd then? ...and how did they carry all their stuff that you saw? ...(Excuse-T's and B's??? are these towels and briefs?)
Thanks

brainomatic-we think alike.....

I was thinking T's and B's referred to t-shirts and boxers...???

first i am a middle aged guy and have a son at a military academy --another in hs ... so note disclaimer

first, I would generally say to the shower with the towel wrapped around waist --very cheap flip flops woudl be good --germs and all. robe is not a horrible item, but it is something additional to take. if modesty dictates robe, i would suggest going with something thick not thin and 'silky'. also i would suggest a dark manly color --i currently have black, navy would also be a choice. as an aside i believe they wear robes at manly west point. the thick robe think of as an additional towel - as guys tend not to dry off well.

as to what to carry. first i might suggest --unless the trip is too far to take towel wrap around or towel while wearing robe and shower stuff shower go to room put on pant (shorts etc) and either topless or an old tshirt(if modesty dictates) and then return to shave etc. that would be my general recommendation ,

A few other comments , i would suggest going with body wash rather than soap ,, less messy... like you could prbably put soap and shampoo in pockets of robe carry a towel and u are good to go.

random thoughts .... go with the heavier robe --i am guessing what he is looking at would be what i would get.. again dont go light weight for pratcial --additional drying and cultural -is that a silk robe? ...

ok my opinion on the run to the bathroom in the night, get some cheap loose atheletic shorts (long style of today) and a ratty t-shirt ... assuming u sleep in underwear... slide on shorts and tshirt and hit the latrine ... generally for kids his age the robe is a bit dorky but probably acceptable if showering .

those are my thoughts

My boyfriend stuck his shampoo and bar of soap in a plastic bag for shower use, but he's a bit of a minimalist. I think most of the guys just get those plastic shower totes from Target/Walmart/Bed Bath and Beyond and stick their shower stuff in them. They just carry toothbrush/paste to the bathroom, and usually cologne/deoderant just stays in the room for use there.

Thanks for the tips!

Oh thanks so much, great tips everyone!.......robe is the heavyweight thirsty towel-like kind(navy-he wants initials on it -too pretentious?) Yes it will be good for drying off in too. Cheers!

The high point of our college tour was a large group of about 40 (parents and hs students) in the hall making way for the girl resident heading for the shower wrapped in her towel. :)

ooops! sorry, just rechecked the topic title = what does a GUY wear...

My son wears a terrycloth bathrobe or else multiple towels (waist and shoulders). He prefers the bathrobe. I got one of those fancy ones you want to steal from hotels on overstock.com. He carries his bar of soap in a zip lock bag and his bottle of shampoo in his hand. Last year he had a sink in his dorm room so that was all he needed to carry. Oh, and barefoot.

i dont know a single male at my university (coed by room but each sex had its own bathroom) who wore a bathrobe after the first week or two of school. a few girls did, but even most of them gave up after a while and took their chances with a towel.

the short answer on exactly what to do depends on the shower set-up, however. some have two sets of curtains, meaning there is a small changing area (and a place to keep things dry) between the shower itself and the rest of the bathroom. in this case it makes sense to just wear a pair of mesh shorts there and wear the towel back. if not, a towel both directions is probably in order.

do they slip? yeah... i flashed the girls across the hall once. but it was funny. we all laughed. and it didnt happen again after november of my freshman year. not a big deal.

same idea with trips to the bathroom. sometimes id throw on a pair of shorts over my boxers. most of the time i didnt even do that. heck, most of the guys on my hall didnt even bother to get dressed for fire drills in the middle of february. 'modesty' was definitely not in anybodys dictionary.

anyway, those little $1.99 crates with a handle are probably your best bet as far as supplies go. not only are they big enough for a males shower supplies, they keep one hand free in case of towel slippage. and dont worry about them not being masculine... almost everybody will have one.

edit: oh, and definitely buy a pair of cheap flip flops for the showers. its just not worth the risk. and i kept all of my non-shower stuff in a bag in my room and brought it to the bathroom with me as needed. i remember most people doing the same.

well eric has modern up to date info ..even in my day the robe wouldnt be used much... let me make one comment, your S may want to take as a backup --sort of a security blanket, so that he has that option --if he is on the modest side. If cost isnt prohibitive, get some initials, if he wants.... I also think the most common thing is the towel around waist and minimilist. but the mesh shorts under are another good sugestion .. ... I would say one thing even if he just wears the robe for a week or two --and he is concened about this situation . AND many guys are .. the robe would be worth it for the week or two alone .... he will then get the feel of the situation and modify accordingly.

I think this is a great thread and glad to hear from some 'young' men ...this is a big help for mothers -and dads- as there boys go off
