What does being able to take some majors entirely pass/fail mean?

Is there any significance to this? Why would certain departments have this policy?

I just got my Courses and Programs of Study booklet and was reading up on some of the majors that interested me and noticed that some (ex. history) allow majors to take most courses pass/fail "subject to college and division regulations and with consent of instructor".

Wouldn't not having grades prove an impediment to getting a job, going to grad/professional school, etc? And how strict are the "college and division regulations" and the instructors about this policy?

Does this policy imply that the major is either ridiculously easy or ridiculously hard?

You can take classes P/F but you have to have a certain GPA in order to graduate, and P/F classes don’t count towards your GPA.
