What does Berkeley care about?

Do they care more about the unweighted GPA from 10th & 11th grades?
Do they care if your extra curricular activities show a connection to the major you are applying as?
Do they care what college you apply to within the university?
How much do they care about the personal statement?
How "holistic" is their admissions process?

thanks guys

I can only answer a few questions.

They care a lot about the UC GPA, which is 10th and 11th grade GPA, with one extra point for up to eight semesters. The unweighted GPA, on the other hand…I’m not quite sure if they would see it, unless it’s on a transcript.

Well, it’d be great if ECs matched future interests, but it’s not like everyone knows exactly what they’re doing right away. They probably don’t place that much weight on it.

Well, some colleges have capped majors. Heck, if you applied for College of Engineering, that’d be a lot more difficult than if you applied, say, to the College of Natural Resources. And don’t think that you can apply to one college and sneakily transfer to another. If you don’t think you’d get in when applying as a freshman, don’t think you can get into that college by transferring when you’re already in the university.
(…That just confused me, so it might confuse you too.)

THEY CARE A LOT BY THE PERSONAL STATEMENT.

They claim it’s holistic. No one really knows except for the admissions officers though.

Okay, so that was all the questions, but they might not be completely accurate.

4 is definitely accurate though.

kagami, you are pretty spot on with all of those answers from what I have seen, learned, and experienced.

@kagami

so are you saying they cannot see the unweighted gpa unless i send my transcript?
when do i send my transcript, and which GPA do they ask for on the online applications?

When I applied last year, you didn’t submit your GPA. You put in by hand all the A-G courses you took, and labeled if they were honors, CC and AP classes or not. You send the transcript after your acceptance.

^^ exactly right, you only put in A-G courses, they are treated as plain letter grades, no + or -. After acceptance, and then after you submit an intent to register and a deposit, they give you a list of things to do over the summer before classes start, one of which is to send in a transcript. It is only used to verify that your list of classes and grades were accurate.
