Hi, I'm a high school junior and I was wondering what it takes to get into CMU. I'm interested in computer science and will take the AP Computer Science test next week and soon finish an online introductory course to computer science on MITx (similar to edX). Thanks!

Know that CS is the hardest to get into by far. If you love CMU that much, consider applying to one of the easier schools and then attempting an internal transfer to CS. Anyways, CMU loves displayed interest in the school so visit them and get to know them.

I thought MITx was simply a subset of edX? Anyways, math! They like math. Ace your math standardized tests. Keep doing CS, maybe create a portfolio of fun things you’ve coded? Stay passionate, and show that passion!

OK, KEYSMASH, I will do that. thank you for the advice.

If you really want to get into SCS, you have to prove that you’re good at math. Get mainly A’s in math classes, take the highest level math offered, join math clubs, and do well on some major math competitions (AMC, USAMTS, ARML, etc).

Of course, your passion for CS is just as important as your passion for math (if not more so). Get a CS internship over the summer, do CS research, do USACO, some light web design, etc. Trust me, there are plenty of ways to show your enthusiasm for math and CS in high school.
