What does everyone else think?

I have to admit that my parents were not really enormously happy about my ED acceptance. They both went to a religious college and wanted me to go there also. The whole elite admissions things has not been all that important to them... in fact I think it has been kind of embarrassing for them to accept congrats from other parents. So I don't know...

willywonka - You seem pretty cool and so I would obviously like for you to come to Dartmouth, but if you are leaning toward W&L or even seriously considering it feel free to ask me questions. I have lived in Lexington for 13 years so I know the college/facilities/town-gown relationships pretty well.

Thanks Julian. I am considering it (it was the first school that I heard about that I loved, first school I visited, etc., and am going back in about ten days for the GWHS event) but I really feel like I would regret it forever if I didn't go to Dartmouth. I still have some small reservations about W&L but I'll have those cleared up in a little more than a week.

Willy,

Sometimes it is better to ask, not what would I like, but which one would I regret having missed. I also understand the romantic connection to that first school that showed interest in you. When I was in 8th grade I wrote a letter to Washington and Lee, they wrote me back saying that they hoped to hear from me in 3 years (not in 8th grade). lol

haha well...for a girl from my town in the AP track, it's just a given that you'll be accepted to Rutgers, or pretty much any NJ state school. But I don't particularly like Rutgers...I don't really feel that "romantic connection" that Fountain's talking about.

Also, bump!

My mom is a serious, serious planner. She loves to sort out details. e.e Anywho, she's excited b/c there will be a lot of planning invovled in getting me and my detritus up to NH. So she's excited. My dad is real laissez-faire, so he's just "yea"

On a different note, both sets of g-parents are a little upset. My maternal gma chewed my mom out, blaming her for either: forcing me to go to D-mouth or letting me go. She's real old school, and wanted me to go to Vanderbilt. My paternal gdad was all excited about me going to Davidson b/c the president of the college he was a prof at was president of Davidson at some point. I should mention that I'm the first to leave state (either AL or LA) for college. My aunts & uncles are more positive.

Your mother can feel free in planning getting me and my detritus to NH as well, if she's that serious about it!

That is, if I go.

I wish more people knew about Dartmouth. It really is wonderful.

But seriously ... even in New Jersey, lots of people don't know what Dartmouth is. Name-brand recognition isn't everything, but it's depressing when people haven't heard of a wonderful college that you really love.

Joey

Hi Joey,

We live in NYC and when my daughter told some people that she was going to attend Dartmouth, she did get some [i} you poor thing* looks, along with Where's that? and ?hat kind of college is that?

Joey, the fact that people haven't heard of Dartmouth in NJ is like...the most amazing thing ever. It's the absolute hardest for NJ kids - esp. girls like myself, esp. from North Jersey - to get into college, because there are SO MANY OF US all applying to the same schools. When someone I know got deferred from Tufts, they were told it was because she was from North Jersey, and Tufts didn't want to become the Boston branch of Rutgers. The knowledge that some people don't know about Dartmouth, or are deterred by the cold or whatever, and therefore are not applying, is like a wonderful birthday present for me lol.

Well, I think the kids that really are "competition" are very well aware of Dartmouth. I just find it disappointing when some of my friends say "What's Dartmouth?" or give me a sort of look like I would be lowering myself to go there. And that's definitely annoying.

Joey

LOL god, tell me about it! Back when i applied ED Penn, it drove me CRAZY when people were like "ewww, Penn STATE?!"

Sadly, that's one of the reasons I don't really want to go to Penn (in other words, there are other places (namely Dartmouth!) I'd much rather attend). Trivial, I know. :p

ah but from your oh-so-collected behavior on the hotivy it seemed as though your top choice is Brown, is it?

ETA: yowza, that was post #500. i'm GAINING on you veterans! and hooray, post 500, like post 400, took place on the D board!

Eek! You've found me out. Brown is my first choice of schools, but Dartmouth is verrrrry close. To tell the truth, I would be euphoric to attend either college.

Brown is great; I did a summer program there, and the campus was just fantastic. But myself, I like Dartmouth better :-D

Hehehe... you would.

j/k :p I prefer Dartmouth's colors, though.

hahaha. I have a brown Brown sweatshirt...some people are like "ew, that's like the color of [excrement]", but it kinda matched my hair lol.

I'm too scurred to buy any Dartmouth stuff though...afraid it might jinx admission lol

so let's say you got into both Dartmouth and Brown - would you go to Brown?

Yeah, I think it would. Unless there was a HUGE difference in financial aid.

I just really like Brown: Providence is so nice, no core is definitely a plus, and what can I say, I'm quite liberal.

It's kinda weird that I like both D and B so much, since they seem so different, but they both have their own special places in my heart. :D

BTW- I share the same sentiment about not wanting to buy a sweatshirt yet!

bumpity bump bump

who wants to place a bet on me getting 1000 posts by the time decisions are out?
