What does everyone else think?

alibi- do you go to a private school? I'm just curious because at my school, when I tell people where I am applying, I just get glazed looks. Most have heard of Dartmouth, but the rest (Amherst, Williams, Middlebury, etc) are just meaningless names to other students and teachers. At our school, we might have perhaps three students going east (including myself), so I'll be completely on my own wherever I might end up. (exciting, but scary thought :))

no, i don't go to private school, but it is just one of those things that is common to my school, is to have a decent percentage for a CA public school (say 8-15 of a 400 person class) go back east i'm not sure, just one of those things that happens often. the other thing, is that the top students in my class tend to get closeted together in courses, since we all take numerous AP's and honors classes and have similar schedules for 4 years of high school, so we tend to talk about where we are going, and so people tend to know about the schools back east within the advanced classes. of course they know the ivies and most of the higher LAC's but i would say if you were to poll the majority of the students, they haven't ever heard of any of the colleges that i am applying, it jsut happens that most of the people i spend time with have. if that makes any sense

I see. A little different at my high school. Of course, we don't have any history of sending kids to ivies or top LACs, and even going out of state is unusual. But what can you say? Arizona doesn't spend money on education, and doesn't seem to value it too much, either...

jsut different environments i guess. i don't know, support system maybe

just randomly curious- what are your reasons for applying to Williams and Middlebury, alibi? I applied there, too, but probably for different reasons.

Sounds like all you CA people are getting grief for leaving...I can understand that cuz CA is awesome...but so is the Northeast, from NYC up to D. Get ready to replace hella with wicked tho!!!

Also, can't imagine anyone not having heard of D...in my world, it is well-known and very, very respected (New England/Wall Street).

i was mostly looking for smaller private LAC in a rural situation, and when i found middlebury, i really fell in love with the schools it's self for it's programs and the study aboard opportunies, and then williams, was a suggestion by a friend, and it just managed to stay on my list of colleges, i really can't think of one thing that made me keep it on the list

cool- I liked Midd's programs as well (for me it was the languages, environmental science, and international focus)

lol...yesterday my parents were like "Do you regret not having applied to Dartmouth ED?"

i think they're a lot more into Dartmouth now than they were at first...and of course, my mom loves the whole "see? I told you, you apply at the last minute on a whim, you end up getting in and going there" thing...and she has "a feeling" that I'm going to get in.

HA! 12%!

seeing 12% can get very depressing, that means that like 88 % are rejected

eh....some get wait-listed, remember

that's a good... um.... positive(?) attitude, blu. ;)

i can really feel your optimism.

i applied EA gtown (mcdonough-marketing) too! i got deferred though

it's not meant to be positive, it is realistic, so I don't totally crash when the rejection comes, you knwo that about 85% of all the other applicants feel the same way you do

Yeah, and it can be RANDOM too!

even though 12% is a lower % it's not like it went from 50% to 12%. Normally, it would only be a few % higher.

In saying that they are going to drop their accept rate in the face of so many apps, I'm still thinking that D'mouth is misunderstanding the situation around their big increase in applications. This is particularly true when almost every other major LAC is reporting the same 15-20% increase in apps this year.

There is no increase in student population that accounts for the increase.

College Board does not report a significant increase in high scores that would shift the applicant pool to better LAC's.

The economy has not changed so significantly that more people are in the market for $40K + educations.

A 15-20% increase in apps can be answered by the same group of applicants sending in one more form. Go from the standard 7 applications to 8 and everyone sees a 15% increase FROM THE SAME POOL OF APPLICANTS. On line applications and a strong desire to shop for the best finacial aid package says you want to cast your net as far as possible and see what you catch. For the sake of another $60 app fee it's worth the minimal time to send one more out.

This was only exacebated by HY doing away with binding EA. I'm sure that whole group sent out another round of RD apps in the hope of getting better aid and making up their mind later.

If D'mouth only sends out the same number of historical acceptances expecting the same 50-56% matriculation yield, the waitlist could be tapped pretty heavily this year. I think all of the top LAC's are sending acceptances and likely letters TO THE SAME PEOPLE.

Of course we'll never know until the admission stats come out next year.

That's a very good explanation, actually.

I have a question- does Dartmouth let you appeal your decision?

No they do not let you appeal the decision
