what does exeter seek in an applicant

Joining book club and science club at my schooli want to know what exeter/andover is looking for in an applicant. are they looking for someone who helps out at the community a lot or are they looking for someone with outstanding grades?
these are my stats:(A's are the highest grade)
i have all A's and one A- out of 6 classes

Ec:

I have a deep passion for traveling and living in diverse cultures.

I love theatre

i am really worried about my ssat and wondering how much i have to study for it?

First off, if you want chances, post in the chance sub-forum =)

And second, its impossible to tell, some people get in without that much community service, some do tons but still get rejected, etc.

Grades are superficial, as long as you don’t have straight C’s, you should be fine. A 3.5 or above places you in the competitive applicant pool.

And, don’t join clubs to look involved! Top notch schools value quality more than quantity. Let’s say you have 10 EC’s that you’ve done for 1-2 years and you’re compared to someone who only has 3 or 4 but has been doing those since they were 6 years old and are extremely good at them and dedicate a lot of time to those activities. Odds are, they would have a better chance.

great. I’m still trying to discover my best quality. ive tried the violin, flute, piano, languages, and dance. i have been doing yoga and taichi for about 4 years. would that count? I’m also blown away by the drama class that i took and I really love volleyball, but i just discovered them this year.

Don’t stress too much about the SSAT. You seem like a well-qualified applicant. If you study just a bit each night, you should do fine during the SSAT.

Phillips Exeter Academy

The successful applicant will have many of the following characteristics:

Intellectual curiosity and desire for academic rigor

Proven academic success with grades of more A’s than B’s

Strong character

Embrace living in a diverse community

Willingness to engage in conversation as well as being an active listener

Welcomes the company of adults

Cooperative team member in group settings

Self-disciplined study habits along with organizational abilities and time management skills

Studying a classical or modern language (if available at current school)

Involvement in and commitment to extracurricular activities at school or in your community

i have a few more questions:

Are most Exeter/Andover kids very serious about their work or do they just pretty much relax?
Does Exeter/Andover want kids that are still finding out what they want to pursue in life?
On a scale of 1-10: How independent are the students at these schools?
Do all the students stress alot(These are the kind of schools i like:) ?

Probably somewhere in between. I’m not sure about Andover but I know students at Exeter are serious about their work, but we also relax and socialize and have fun.
Yeah, I’m sure they do. I mean, I got accepted and I’m still figuring some stuff out. Also Exeter also changes you. It really helps you figure out what you want to do with your life.
I’d say about 9 (very independent) but it varies from person to person. Plus you need to factor in how far you live and how involved your parents will be. Yeah, students stress a lot. That’s part of Exeter’s charm.

That’s good. I really hope that I may get in but I’m still not sure if it’s the right path

2010 hopeful, i was just about to post that

Im guessing every student there is particularly unique in a way or the other with a talent or brains

yeah. and also remember, there are THOUSANDS of people like you, having all A’s, many EC’s, lot of good academic stuff about them. That’s very common.

What you have to look at, is what you are SPECIAL at. Are you good at something different? I notice you’re Asian, so what different talent or aspect do you have than from other Asians?

That’s what I did. So far, so good.

Yeah, they are pretty serious about their work. There are exceptions, of course.
No one is sure about what they want to do in high school.

Most of my friends are majoring in completely different things than they thought they would be.

I would say most students are very independent. I knew a few students whose parents were very strict and they were a bit more dependent than others, but all in all, very independent.

I’d say yes, it is a stressful environment.

i dont have any extraordinary abilities…and im not really as asian as you think i am, but would they accept people who are masters at more outdoors type of things rather than sports or an instrument. I also love doing poetry…Been doing so for years

I forgot what it’s called, but they do have some sort of “outing” club. And you can do that sort of stuff for gym after prep year, I think.
