What does Harvard consider an expense?

Comparing DD's financial awards from Harvard and Amherst, I see that H estimates roughly $1000 more for books and expenses. Is the price of pizza that much higher in Cambridge, or am is there something I don't know about?

My daughter’s expenses have varied greatly depending upon the class. If the class is using a standard textbook, she has either rented it, purchased it from Amazon or used the library copy. For other classes, where the professor wrote the textbook, she’s had to pay several hundred dollars for the book which was a soft-cover version printed one at a time from a copy place in the square – so there’s not a cheaper alternative. Cambridge is also more expensive than Amherst – a roundtrip Charlie card for the ‘T’ is $5, that’s an expense Amherst doesn’t have.

Good to know. Thx.
