what does High GPA but low SAT say about you?

I know a lot of colleges say that SAT scores matter not so much as they usually reflect the transcript/GPA. But, they also say that a low GPA and high SAT says one thing about you, and a high GPA but low SAT says something totally different. The low GPA high SAT combo says you're lazy but smart, but what does a high GPA low SAT say about you? (hopefully not that you're dumb...)

Thanks!

that you're smart, but just not exceptional on standardized tests.
the low sat/ high gpa combo is less injurious than low gpa/ high sat.

IMO---If you have a high GPA/Low SAT---it may mean:
1.You did not have a "good day" on the day you took your SATs
2. Your school is not very rigorous-easy A's
3. Your teachers realize you have a handle on the material-and allow some wiggle room in your tests for class-but the SAT/college board has no such criteria
4. The SAT type of assessment does not fit your learning style, and you may actually excell in the ACT instead.
I hope this helps-G'Luck!

agreed with poster above... I have the same situation. I'm ranked 1 in my class out of 450... i only scored a 2090 on my sat's tho..

On the other hand, a high GPA and low SAT could also correlate with the difficulty of your school. For example, my high school is extremely competitive and few get As, so many more students have the low GPA/high SAT combo simply because academics are harder (and many take a lot of AP classes), including myself. I have a 3.6 UW GPA but a 35 ACT.

I think it says that you are actually a harder worker than you are actually really smart. Obviously there is still a lot of intelligence there..but you have to study a lot for it then the people who can just walk right into a test without preparing/studying for it at all.

It says the person's a hard worker which is a good thing:)

GPA's must be taken in context. At high school's that are average or below, it would be very normal to see the high GPA, low SAT combination. At those schools a student would not need to test at the 95th percentile nationally do well.

kMz where do you go to school? Holy crap!

It could mean that you go to an inferior school that hasn't taught you what you need to know to do well on the SAT.

It also could mean that you are a very hard worker and are able to get high grades by getting lots of help and advice from the teachers or by doing extra credit or doing very well on assignments like outlining that are designed to make sure that students learn the material.

It also could mean that you don't know how to take standardized tests. For instance, you could spend too much time on the more difficult questions, and then not have time to finish the easier questions.

I would say my school is very competitive but the SAT's just elude us... we have kids who score very high on the SAT's in my school but they are in the bottom part of the class... it just shows we work harder for the grades we get and have motivation but standardized tests seem to elude us. SAT I is overrated, SAT subject tests are obviously much more indicative of your abilities as a student.

I just want to say different school have differenct grading scales and be very competitive. I would say that SAT put you on the same platform and say a lot about you if you school is competive. That is why colleges still look at test scores.

it means you are not so hot at taking SATs. What does this mean? It could be a speed thing or a certain type of reasoning. Don't let anyone tell you that you are not as smart.

You could be a bad test taker, or maybe you're just not as intelligent as you thought you were and your school has grade inflation. Or it could be bad teachers. Or you had a bad day at the testing place.
Basically, it tells you nothing.

sorry to ask a question on your post, but...
would a college hold it against you that you're not a great standardized test taker? I mean, I know I'm smarter than what my SAT scores say. will colleges be able to figure that out or do I need to just come right out and say it somewhere on my application?

you're actually an idiot, but you try really really hard. like one of those kids who stay up till 4AM everyday studying because they really don't have enough to brainpower to get it quick....

lol jk=)

it can say a number of things about you. plenty of ppl with 4.0's fail to break 2000. They're not stupid, they just either had a bad day on testing day, aren't good test takers, or go to really easy schools, or any other reason from a multitude of reasons.

I have to say I have this problem and it's pretty embarrassing. I blame it on the time restraint because I know I am a lot smarter than my SATs say.

Thats what they all say.

The SAT actually doesn't have harsh time constraints. There is at least one minute of time per question and usually more than that.

I do really well in school... 97+ in almost all my courses
but the problem i find with the SAT is that...it probably doesn't represent me the best...
I mean most of my courses are science-based/math-based
I could really care less if i didn't understand a piece of english literature (i dropped AP this year HAHA ) :)

i agree w/ hannah. last year, this one girl at my school averaged about 2-3 hours of sleep per night.. i mean, when you get to that point, is it even worth it?
