What does it mean to "audit" a class?

I've seen this thrown around a couple times; what does it mean?

sit in on one without actually doing the work

like fizix2 says, basically you just go to the class to learn and you don't get credit for it. But if you were to audit an AP class, then you could take the AP test at the end of the year.

Generally, in my school, we "audit" classes during our lunch period, because we technically can't get credit for taking 9 classes.

Audit means taking courses without credit. In my school you get a big AUD next to the classes you audit. Audit is technically limited to sophomores-seniors, but people still chill in other teachers classes and do work. I'm trying to audit LC next year.

Then what's the point? Learning for the sake of learning? Do you not have to do anything?

you go to lectures, and learn it's easier than self-studying, since the teacher sets the pace for you.
you don't do the hw/tests/quizzes, or, atleast, you don't have to do them. some teachers will make you take them and grade them, but it doesn't go on your transcript.

note: i've never actually audited a class; this is from what i've heard about it.
