My friend just got an email from a coach at Cal who said he had "tagged" his application for the admissions process. What does this mean? What are his chances of getting in? Decisions come out in 10 days, so is it odd to be notified so late in the game?

Check some of the other queues in this section for more details on tagging, covering, supporting, and several other terms and numbers.
I really depends on the school and the sport. I assume this athlete had prior conversations with the coach? With just the limited information you have, it suggests that the chances of admission are increased because the coach is providing some level of support. BUT 'it ain't over til it's over'!!!! I don't know anything about the Cal coaches, but perhaps someone else does. What sport?

It is for track and field. He has had previous contact with the coach....the coach also asked for his SAR? We tried looking up what "tagged" might mean at Cal...and we found somewhere that it just shows the admissions that a coach wants the student...but isn't it odd to be tagged so late in the process--when decisions come out in about a week?

It means the admissions people will be taking a close look at the application, keeping in mind that the coach wants him, and that they will be trying to admit him if at all possible. It may be happening this late in the process because the coach either lost a recruit late (change of heart or not admitted by Cal due to grades, test scores, getting an F, not being cleared by the NCAA, etc.) or had someone drop out, leaving him another admissions tag. Your friend is likely to be admitted if he has decent grades/test scores and meets UC requirements.

Thanks for the great info Bessie! He has decent grades but a low SAT relative to Berkeley standards, but probably a decent SAT relative to Berkeley's student-athlete standards.

Eric, I may be late to the post, but this may help others. When my son and I went through the recruiting process ( D1 & D3) everything seemed to be as clear as mud. Here
is what I learned. Big time Football & Basketball boys programs’ recruit much differently than all other sports & schools. Being tagged is simply a way to identify a student athlete in the admission process. Usually a student athlete is afforded “leeway” with respect to SATs & GPA. Slotting or having a slot is a way for the college to award a coach with x number of admissions for his team ( they do however have to meet certain standards). Pre Reading or being pre read is a way for the admissions department to determine the chances of being admitted. When I went on visits with my son, I always asked to have him pre read during his visit. Lastly, a student athlete can “sign” or “commit” to the school in a number of ways. For smaller ,no scholarship sports usually a binding early decision application is the approach. My son LOVES his school and sport, everything the school and coach told us was accurate and truthful. They are truely TOPNOTCH… Always visit the school and talk with the coach. Lastly, a good school should care about their athletes and be very truthful of your chances. Good luck!!!

What are the expected outcomes of a “pre read”? Does the admissions officer project a likelihood of admission (e.g., “likely,” “possible”, etc)? And what’s being “pre read”? Had your son already submitted an application, or was the “pre read” just some kind of quick calculation of an Academic Index?

My daughter was pre-read at the school she is now set to attend in the fall. It may vary, but in our case it consisted of the High school faxing unofficial copies of the transcripts and us faxing them an official copy of the SAT scores (that had not yet been mailed) and the college coach taking them to admissions, who then sent us an email stating in some very ambiguous terms that if everything was accurate, and if her grades stayed where they were, and if she completed all required classes, she would be eligible for admissions.

As far as I know, the term “academic index” is only in the Ivy league.

My daughter’s school (DI) also does “early reads”. The coach basically lets you know whether or not you will be admitted based on your current grades/SAT’s. She was also recruited by a Big Ten school. They let her know right away (September) while she was on her official visit. They separate all the athlete apps and “code” them. Admissions reads them right away and they will let the athlete know asap.

Tagged usually means coded as said above. Duke for example sent a green application form with a special person to send it to. Green means the color was green for every form, letters of rec, the return envelope, etc. Be careful, what coaches say is not binding on Admissions. As you look at better schools admissions rules. So just because the coach says your in, your not until admissions says your in.
