What does it mean to FILE INCOME TAX RETURN in the CSS profile?

I'm an international student and I'm filling out the CSS profile for ED so the deadline is in 2 days. I need to know what it means to file an income tax return and if I'm supposed to file it to the school or just use it to fill out the information? I don't even know what income tax return mean.
I filled out all the information for documents that my parents brought (salaries, taxes...etc)
But how do I file this?
And how do I answer the question "Has the student completed an income tax return for the 2013 tax year?" I said "Will file" but I don't know what this means and what I'm supposed to do
Please help!! Thank you

Income Tax returns are for US students and their parents. In your country I am sure your parents must be paying income tax too. So try to fill in an estimate of income tax your parents and maybe yourself be paying for year 2013 and look at 2012 income tax to get some help with the numbers. Just fill the CSS portion and it can go to any college you want to go to.

College wants to know your income before they give you any grants and loans.

“Has the student completed an income tax return for the 2013 tax year?”
This question is for US residents or for foreigners working in the US. Filing US income tax return is a way for people to pay income tax to US federal and state governments. When filing they have documents to tell how much they pay for taxes. Colleges use info from these documents to tell how much income students and parents have in order to give financial aid.

If you do not work and don’t have to pay taxes then say “Will not file”

You may need to provide proofs of income from your parents later.

Thanks for the quick replies! You are life savers.
So all I have to do is fill out the profile without attaching or filing anything else?

I have another question: In the parents household information, where do I include my brother who is dependent but does not live in our household (he studies in France but we send him a lot of money) ??

If your brother is attending college as an undergraduate, and is really eligible to be a family dependent, you include him in your household. College students permanent addresses are their parents.

If your brother is not in college, or is already a college grad, and is not really a household member, you cannot count him as such.

You need to look at each college website to know what are required to send. CSS profile and what to be sent to colleges are different things. After submiiting CSS profile you may receive more instructions telling what and where to send for each college. Some colleges don’t use IDOC service for document transfer. You may want to send an email to the FA office and ask if things are not clear. They reply within 1-3 days. International students have different situations from US students therefore most of us don’t know all details.

Hi,
I’m a prospective international student I’d like to apply to financial aid at IVY league schools because they’re the only ones that offer it but my father is a few years late on his taxes. We don’t own any properties or assets and I don’t want to lie on my CSS profile so I will fill in the real amounts of income but I have no way to account for them. Will my application be hurt if I say we’re late on our taxes under “special circumstances” ??
