What does it mean to get a NetID from a school?

I applied to UConn not even a week ago, and this morning I received an email, "Welcome to the University of Connecticut.... your NetID username is:..." Now, when I signed up, the only options to identify myself as were student, faculty or staff. I am so confused; what does this mean? I applied regular decision too.

The NetID is simply a way of letting you check your application.

Very often, the application tracking is under the student access area. It may require a password and an activation process before you can do that though. This is one of advantage of submitting application early as you will know the progress of your application and see if anything is missing.
